What experience have people had with DTR and what do you think?

My car is currently in DTR and has had the attached work carried out... it will also have a new Mohair Roof and a full respray...

DTR have an excellent reputation. Some people make rude comments about their exhausts but the one fitted to my B lasted 10 yrs with no bother. They should do a real swinging job.

Lot of money to spend on an N reg ragtop...but Hey! its a B so ultra special. if it was an N reg Fiat Panda I'd be sending in the guys in white coats.

You should end up with a great little car that will last you for another 15 years..so long as you don't get squashed by some drunk Belgian in a 55 ton truck on the M1...

Enjoy!

DTR did a lot of work on mine each year for its annual services before I got it, including respray and hood in late 2008. The car has been largely faultless since I got it - just insignificant everyday wear and tear items really.

Well they seem to be doing well out of you.

I think you should be visited by the men in white coats as that is a lot of money. You could buy another good example for that!

I hope it is worthwhile!

:)

Oh and DTR were Fiat 124 specialists, work dries up, then Fiat Barchetta specialists, work dries up, now Alfa and Fiat specialists.

What happens when work dries up again?!

Lancia specialists?!

I know I'm crazy!!! but I couldn't leave her to rot away... she must be preserved!!

And unfortunately, as im a crazy italian car lover with no garage ; no tools and no technical/mechanical know how it had to be done!!

I'll have a sweet little sports car when DTR have finished with her...

and no that price doesnt include respray and roof...!

I'm sorry but that's quite a stupid thing to say. What do you expect a company to do when a particular area of work dries up - seek out more work in areas in which they are already familiar or just sign on the dole?

Hardly stupid considering the 124 spiders and Barchetta's still exist is it?

I think the term 'specialist' is too loosely used these days.

The phrase for companies is the same as in the old time French Foreign Legion 'March or die' In other words the market is always changing and the company has to change with it. I suspect a company that started up doing coachbuilding and specialist body repairs for the brand new Austin Cambridge might be a tad short of work by now if they'd stayed in that niche.

My only worry with this case would be the virtual rebuilding of an old, worn car. The B isn't built to RR standards and unfortunately wears out. I'd have considered selling this one and buying a better example to do up.

Owners choice..I'll have spent 10k on mine after the bodywork / respray.

I have read all of the receipt and it looks all good to me. I think as Doc says it is cool that you are spending so large on your B. I would do too if I had the cash.

In my six years of Barchetta ownership I have had all my servicing and repairs carried out by DTR and have never been anything less than satisfied. I've never put it to the test but I have always got the impression that they know more about maintaining Barchettas than any Fiat main dealer or local 'bloke in a shed'.

Unfortunately us Barchetta owners are reaching the point where our cheap, fun run-arounds are becoming old, worn out, money pits (see recent MOT failure thread). One by one we will have to decide whether to scrap, learn how to weld or join the Classic & Thoroughbred Car reading fraternity who lavish ridiculous amounts of money on gorgeous cars just because they love them so much. Spending thousands on an N reg. is a risk and - I hope this isn't news - you won't get it back, but buying a newer Barchetta can also be risky (next time you're in DTR ask to see the W reg Riviera awaiting welding). Who would I trust to help me find a good one? A Barchetta specialist, of course (even one that's a 124/Alfa specialist to boot).

All those lovely old classics you see at shows have been preserved by people with the foresight to recognise a future classic and who have been prepared to spend 'more than the car is worth' on keeping them running.

Ultimately, you pays your money and takes your choice...

PS. Anyone going to Brooklands Auto Italia day?

Esher. I was thinking of meeting up with Fiat Forum cars in Tesco car park and driving in in convoy the back way.
