Heard a strange rattling noise today. I'm aware most rattles can be traced back to the exhaust system so that was my first guess. Turned out to be right.

I'm missing the rubber mounts that hold/suspend the exhaust. They must have simply worn with age.

Need to get some replacements. Are they model specific? I have a 2003 MK2B Punto if that matters.

Also, where can I get them from? They shouldn't really be more than a few quid, right?

Cheers.

They're generic, but there are several generic ones, if you see what I mean, so take them to your local factor/exhaust fitters to match them (you're likely to have more than one type).

Halfords (and others) do polyurethane ones, too, which cost a bit more, but last a lot longer.

Yeah I get what you mean.

I think it must have fallen on to the road or something, I don't have it any more to judge the shape and size :(

Thanks for the response though.

I found this online:

Guess there are 3 rubber pieces along the entire system.

Will see if I can find them on eBay and order them.

Might as well replace the lot while I'm at it.

Thanks for the help.

rear ones are indeed £2 each trade
never bought the other ones
use some fairy liquid or duck oil or even spit to aid removing and replacing rubbers onto arms:)

I bought a new replacement rear rubber mount (2001 mk2 punto) from ebay. Cost about £2 and was exactly the same as the one that came off.

Except better condition....

I cut the old one off, while making sure the back box was supported.

Previously I salvaged one from a scrappy, took me about 1/2 hour to lever it off, losing skin in the process while lying in a puddle.
Imagine how p1ssed off I was to find a brand new one for £2.

Fairy liquid, or red rubber grease to get it on. Might help to wire brush the hanger rods first as they are normally quite rusty and rough.

its best to undo the bolt holding the bracket to the rear chassis ,put the rubber on back box and bracket, push up ,use a jack if in a confined space, replace bolt, watch for heat shield as they can be stanley knives:)

Right thanks for all the help guys. Managed to sort it myself. In case anyone stumbles across this thread via Google or another search engine, I'll quickly describe what I did.

I found some rubber mounts online. They're two types for the Punto with the manicat exhaust system (see the diagram in one of my posts above), a odd triangular shaped one for the backbox and two circular ones that are used down the centre pipe. They retailed for about £2 each and a bit for 1st class postage (needed to get my car back running quickly). I also bought some more for spares just in case. I think I found them just by Google searching for "punto exhaust parts" and finding one for the 1.2i engine.

Okay, next I crawled under my car (a lot easier if you can back it onto some ramps to get a bit of ground clearance) and using a Stanley knife blade (I'm sure any knife would do though) I hacked away at the remaining rubber hanging down from the undercarriage above the backbox and discarded it once removed.

Now for the hard part. You're really going to need some kind of lubrication for this. For lack of anything better lying around, I used some shoe polish wax. I smeared it all over the mounts hanging down where the rubber piece is supposed to go and in and around the holes for the mounting prongs on the actual rubber piece. I then gradually just worked it on, the whole thing took about 5 minutes to get on as the positioning is very awkward. Make sure you don't push it too far back and that both "prongs" of the mount are in the holes of the rubber correctly.

Do the same lubrication trick with the prongs on the back box that also go into the 2 other holes on the rubber and your new rubber mounts will now be securely holding up your exhaust backbox.

Repeat the process for the two other centre pipe rubber mounts if they need replacing too.

Thanks guys.
