Anoth problem with my 2000 plate Punto MK2

I had a new exhaust fit last november and pretty much since it was fit it has rattled
I took it back to the garage and they rehung it, which didnt change anything

It seems to do it mainly whilst in reverse but does it often when sat at traffic lights when in 1st holding on the biting point

The rattling is quite loud, especially if your sat in the back and I dont want to have to buy a new exhaust

Has anyone else had any similar issues??

Hi mate,

When you say rattling, does t sound like the exhaust is hitting the underneath of the car, or more like a mattalic "rattle" coming from the exhaust itself?

Stick one corner on axle stands.. get underneath and look for any impact marks. If necessary, shake the exhaust and see where it clonks. The exhaust probably has a loose or missing mount. You may have to bring a mallet with you to encourage one of the hooks or arms to be further away from where it's banging against the body, so that the rubber mounts (assuming they are in good nick) are tighter.

wow at last i found someone with the sameeee problem!! its the most horrible sound. i took it to a garage. they got it up onto a ramp. put it in 1st and reverse an when it hit biting point its started rattleling. its hard to explain but wen the car is at biting point it starts to lowe (maybe as it takes off i dno) an the exhaust hits agaisnt a long black axel or arch at the back of the car. the guy had a mallet and a plank of wood and knocked the exhaust back a cuple inches an seemed to be fine. but its come back :( i had 3 people in the back of my car so it pushed the car down. and while i was driving the rattling came back, its worse thank ever. i dont think this can be fixed. its jus a very poor desgin on puntos part. mite need a whole new exhaust system?? ill try get pics to show wot i mean.

glad im not alone
Ive had it looked at twice
Im going to get an entire new exhaust within the next few weeks so hopefully this will work

ill have a look and see if I can find the black axle on mine and any pics would be a good help :)

This is VERY common on Mk2s....... its not down to poor design, its down to poor fitting of the exhaust. They had the right idea by hitting it with a mallet, but if that had also rotated it slightly (with the clamp undone) im sure your problem would be gone. The problem occurs when the rear silencer is pushed too far onto the centre section, and is mounted slightly twisted. This means the clearance between the rear of the silencer and the rear suspension beam is limited. This results in knocking when the suspension is deflected, and occurs especially when ther is weight in the rear. The solution is to undo the clamp that connects the rear silencer to the centre section, hit the rear of the silencer with a rubber malet or similar untill it moves forward !/4 to 1/2 an inch, and rotate the silencer slightly so that the bottom of it is further away from the suspension beam. Do the clamp bak up tight, and it shouldnt knock any more.

Hope this helps,
Alan

girlfriend had this problem on her 02 plate 8v 1200cc. had a new exhaust fitted couple of months ago (pattern part exhaust) all of a sudden rattling like made between 65-80. got it up on ramps 3 weekends ago and the middle mount has been hittin the pipe so took the mount off and solved instently, no noise ever since
