Hi, went to the garage for the second time to have the back box / tailpipe support replaced because it had failed. The bloke at the garage said the reason he thought the rubber support had failed was the back box getting too hot, he thought it might be 'overfuelling', I am getting 30 / 31 to the gallon and my marea 20v is running beautifully, could the bloke be right or is he blowing smoke?

when this happens it is usually due to a badly fitted exhaust (slightly twisted), or a badly made one (slightly bend comapred to original, as if often the case with aftermarket cheapies).

a slighty variation in fitting position will put a lot of extra strain on the back rubber mount, causing it to split quickly. this can usually be prevented by taking some of the strain at the 2 other mounts. you can fit slightly smaller rubber mounts on the other 2 mounting points and it should be fine. failing that you need to bend the rear mounting arm on the exhaust up slightly to reduce the strain on the rubber.

Thanks for the advice. Took the car to a trusted garage, they said nothing wrong, emissions test was clean. Going to fit a polyurethane replacement exhaust mount over the back box, hopefully that'll cure the problem.

I ordered one but they sent me the wrong one! still waiting to get it sorted and fitted.
