So, two MOTs back my mk2b 1.2 8v failed its MOT because they couldn't do the emissions test. Turns out the flexi connector on the central exhaust pipe was blowing.

Changed that out for a third party part. All good, passed the MOT.

This MOT, just a few weeks ago, the exhaust is now blowing from the same place (not as badly, mind).

I'm a bit disappointed this hasn't lasted longer really. It was only a 20 quid part... do you reckon I should have gone with an OEM part? Or is there just an inherent weakness in the flexi joints?

I hate flexi joints on exhausts - but tbh there a must....
If its old and crusty - and you have todo a backbox - i've actually damaged the flexi getting backboxes off causing them to blow BADLY

Buy cheap buy twice

Are you sure its defo blowing out the flexible joint - or the mating faces between downpipe/flexi flanges

I've had issues getting them to seal up too!

I just took their word that it was blowing from the flexi joint but I think I will investigate properly myself

Even for £20 - i'd wanted it to last a few months not weeks

Contact seller and claim refund

Go to a supplier that sells decent exhaust parts (branded not cheap copy parts)

I think I worded my post a bit confusingly. I replaced the part in March 2016, to pass last year's MOT. So perhaps for £20 I didn't get bad value for money, if it's lasted the best part of a year.

This year they advised that it was blowing again. It's definitely blowing from somewhere though, my car sounds like a lawnmower :p

Get Car up on stands/high pavement or on drive up ramps

Cold engine - Start it up - get a friend to cover the exhaust while your under car
A Sealed exhaust will build pressure up - it'll keep blowing your hand off the ehxuast to release pressure

If there is a leak - the hole will allow pressure to escape - you will hear it and the pressure been outputted will certainly help find it

please note - you'll only get a few mins todo this as the exhaust will be emitting harmful gasses and will get hot!

You can get a min or 2 longer if you use a soaked rag to cover exhaust

I've gone through about 4 of the flexi-part of the exhaust. I've become a master at swapping them.

They seem to be a bit of a weak spot in the Punto exhaust system.

unless the flexi is some poor copy part off an internet si=te then they should work for years
i would be checking engine/gearbox mountings and also wondering what the driving style of the driver is

Must admit
Had less cracking of my.manifold and flexi's been problem matic when i re-invented the exhaust manifold bracket t getbox mount
Mine probably works better too!

Dunno why mk2s didnt have em but mk2bs did....
