I have a horrible baffle from my exhaust and as such, need a new one as it sounds like a boy racer gone wrong.

Any ideas what I would expect to pay for a new back box and for it to be fitted?

It all depends on what garage you go to.. a exhaust/tyre/tuning garage will be relatively cheap.. though it does all depend :bang: my mate had is centre and back box done, parts and labour 120.. im guessing about 60-70..

Its a wild guess but its probably not far off. your better off buying the parts and doing it yourself.. its a very easy job.

Good luck price hunting!!:slayer:

Locally i got a mid-section and back box (in one jobby) and clamp for £44.

And tbh if you can't fit one yourself it's so simple. Remove old clamp, washing up liquid rubber mounts (and cut the back mounts off) and put new one into place with plenty of sealant.

If bits are £44 it's an hours labour in a garage i'd imagine maybe hour and a half so about 100-120.

All you'll need is a hacksaw (or grinder is preferred but this is cheap), a 13mm spanner or ratchet with socket and cable ties help with loads of sealant. Oh and a hill outside your house or axle stands.

I have see a rear silencer on ebay which is a direct replacement for a mk2 Punto (standard silencer)

If so, how do I attach it? Does it slide over the other pipe and then clamp them together?

Hammer the old one off or cut? I don't have a welder or any experience with one if that's required :(

that's a waste. remove the mounts by unbolting them from the car then you can get the rubbers off very easy when the whole thing is off the car

if you still have a standard oem exhaust on then it "could" be a 1 piece so will need cutting and new box will just bolt over the pipe if you cut in the right place

Cost me 54.75 for a center section and back box... fitting was free because i work at the garage lol.

Where do you live, a mid silencer is different to the gear box, I have a full exhaust system Im selling. Backbox is seperate. PM me if you are near manchester and interested

I'm up in County Durham

I've got it booked in for Tuesday after finding what the problem was - the silencer fell off at 70mph.

Pulled over to find it eventually snapped at the join between pipe and the back box - but still hanging by the rubber - must have been hanging by slither of rust before a good jolt finished it off.

Kicked it off and drove away sounding like a tractor.

Hi,

We have 1999 S60 1.2/8v "Team" and need to replace both parts.

Kwik-Fit quoted £130 for the tail-pipe (that is, everything from the Cat backwards) and £120 for the down-pipe (that is, from the manifold to the Cat).

The 1.2/8v engine came in two flavours, one pre'97 and the other post, called 176A7.000 and 176B4.000 respectively.

176A7.000 has two system options numbered 330459 and 330835
176B4.000 has two system options numbered 330491 and 330836

The 459/491 sets have upright rear silencer and a long tail pipe whilst 835/836 have an oval/cylindrical rear silencer and short tail pipe; 835/836 sets are cheaper.

You can see details here.

The best prices and most comprehensive supply I found for our car was here, but you can trace them for your model by starting from the beginning.

BTW, I've no idea what the real difference between the two back-box styles is; if there's a real difference I'd be really grateful to hear about it; thanks.

Jules

I get most of my parts from "EuroCarParts" a replacment cat for £40, front downpipe for £20 (1997 MK1 punto), dont know about the rest of the exhaust but i've never had any problems using them.

Ultimately cost £56 for a new silencer (not budget) and labour.

Can't complain
