the guide perfectly describes the problem ive got. but i was wondering if anyone had a step by step guide on how to remove it and clean it. pictures would be helpful. if not does anyone know how much fiat charge.

either blow it with compressed air or go to the scrappy and get one off another car tell them its a bit off the dash and ur get it for a couple of quid!

ash cheers for the advice but i dont even know what the bit looks like. can someone take a picture of it or something and just explain how to disconnect it.

i know, iam a bit of a novice under the bonnet but a fast learner....

tom mate please help as you have done many a time. it an hgt 147. feel like such an idiot mate

Best thing to do is to take it to an independant garage and ask them to clean the throttle body for you. Unfortunately, this doesn't cure the problem as a rule.

Whilst the main throttle body is cleared of the carbon build up, I'm fairly sure that you will need a new air-flow meter (or pertentiometer/air pressure sensor as they're often referred to). This is the sensor which sits on the throttle body and adjusts the intake mixture that casuses the erratic idling. They're made by Bosch and are VERY fragile and tempermantal.

Unfortunately, you will nedd teh throttle body and ECU parameters resetting after a new meter has been fitted. Even more unfortunately, only a garage with the FIAT "SMART" laptop can do this work - they'll diagnose the problem quickly via the laptop and tell you what's wring.

The air flow meter costs about £90+vat to buy from Bosch yourself, then there's the laptop plugin fee (usually about £40), then about an hour to two hours to fit, clean and reassemble then reset the parameters.

Unfortubnately, it recently cost me over £200 for an Alfa 145 Cloverleaf, but it drives so much better for it!

Good luck and if you need any more help, please give me a shout on here or you can email me @ [email protected]

No - not that Dirk Diggler from Boogie Nights!

The potentiometer is the thing that indicates throttle position, its not a MAF sensor.

An air pressure sensor is used on MAP based injection systems, not MAF systems. (which use a MAF sensor)

A MAF sensor will sit before the throttle body, the potentiometer sits on the throttle body and a MAP sensor sits after the throttle body.

Unfortunately can't give specifics about the 147 ICV.

Generally when the monkey mechanics 'clean' a throttle body they don't bother to clean the ICV. You clean the ICV by removing it and giving it a wipe with some kitchen paper.

I'll let the Alfa garage know they're wrong - thanks for correcting them.

sorry been away for a while. but thanks for the help.

Rog, explains why you have so many problems with your alfa, your garage don't know what they are doing ;)

I see. Thanks for that.

1. It's not my Alfa.

2. There are so many problems with it because of it's shoddy build quality and dreadful Bosch electrics.

3. It's not MY garage either, but the said mechanic fixes it correctly, every time. Including the erratic idling.
