I have a recurrent problem with warning messages appearing on the dash-board display together with the engine fault symbol. Is this a common fault and what are the typical causes and solutions?

Problems started with my June 2004 JTD 115 in August 2005 went I got a "oil too low warning" when starting from cold (it wasn't). Later that day I got a "Stop Engine - call garage", but by the time the recovery arrived the problem had cleared. (Dealer found nothing in ECU memory)

A year later in July 2006 I got "ECU fault - go to garage" (or something similar), but the fault clear after about 10 restarts and there were no adverse driving affects.

Since September this year the same fault has occured a further 5 times and now seems to occur almost every time I use the car, but disappear after 1 - 10 restarts.

I do now have a common set of circumstances. I'm either always accerating to overtake on an A road (typically in 4th gear) or climbing a steep hill - I'm not thrashing the car, but the engine is always under load.

I will ask my nearest Fiat dealer (45 miles!) to put it on their computer again to diagnose, but the fault seems to self clear, as it's getting more common I'm worried there might be a real fault - oil pressure switch??? rather than a ghost ECU fault.

Anyone any similar experiences?

My Fiat dealer always seems to overfill my car with oil every service so it came as a big suprise when 'oil too low' flashed up the other day.

I have had 'turn off engine' and 'contact garage' once but when I restarted they didn't come up again. Dodgy electrics and FIAT go hand in hand so I didn't worry too much. Nothing has ever come up on the diagnostics when it's been in for service.

If you disconnect the battery.....I take it that all the setting for other things are reset also.
What about the immobiliser, what happens to that or any other coded things?
