Following on from my post from three days ago I have taken the 06 reg 1.9 sporting to my local independant after cutting out when given some wellie going up hills and they report the fault code of P0237 and recommend that the boost pressure sensor is replaced
i was a bit concerned when the technician said that he didnt know the exact location of said thingimibob but then again i gueess these bits vary from vehicle to vehicle but i was even more concerned when he rang the local fiat dealer who didnt recognise the part at all
Would any of the technical minded please guide me on wether this seems a reasonable diagnosis, where the bit is and how much it is likely to cost
Thanks

Thanks for the picture
So far as I know they only read the code
do you have any advice

Depends really if you want to stump up for the extra diagnosis time checking the parameters are correct, turbo operating correctly, checking for boost leaks, etc.

If the Independant is confident it's just a sensor, and you won't have to pay for it if he's wrong, then I'd say go with it and see what happens.

If it's losing power at the point where the turbo is under most load, then it suggests the ECU is seeing an overboost situation (sensor reading over 2400mbar) and switching to limp mode to prevent potential damage. It's not uncommon for the sensor to fail/get clogged, but it's also known for the turbo VGT vanes to stick if driven with a light foot all the time.

Yes I think I will change the sensor but am a bit confused as my local spares shop say they have the boost sensor but its also the MAP sensor is this some kind of two for one offer or what

It's the same. The Mjet MAP sensor reads vacuum as well as positive (boost) pressure.

Map sensor= boost sensor= supercharging pressure sensor, etc

TBH, it sounds like they're a bit moronic to not know it's one and the same thing.

OK I will change the MAP sensor, that is the little chap that is tucked in by the EGR valve right

This is why this forum is so good. Remote diagnosis making sure that a fellow Punto owner doesn't get ripped off by garage who does not have a foggiest. Well done gents!!

unfortunately that is too harsh

bloke brings car in, garage put a code reader on it to ascertain the fault
now they could do deeper in depth work to confirm or they could suggest to try changing this part as it may well be the issue and reasonably cheap what would you want them to do if it was your car and its x £ $ € per hour labour

i certainly wouldnt know where the boost pressure sensor was

garages get a bad press as it is please have all the facts before slagging one you dont even know:)
