Hey everybody!

I just wanted to know that the first Panda with Uno (60hp!) engine in Holland was completed yesterday! Unfortunately it isn't mine.. (damn, someone beat me to it!) but it belongs to another member of the Dutch Fiat Panda Club. He will post pictures and a how-to guide in the next couple of days, so everybody who's interested, have a looky at the site of the Panda Club: http://www.fiatpandaclub.nl

EDIT: I forgot to mention, when you get to that site, click on FORUM, and then look for a post by Barry (it's his car, lucky bastard) with the title: "Uno 60s blok past precies"

First test drive reported a maximum speed of 155 km/h (nearly 100mph) on a flat road with full tank of gas and two people.. fuel consumption was nearly the same as the stock engine, except of course at high speeds..

Topspeed was only limited by the fact that the engine was doing more than 7000 RPM at that time. Does anyone know of Panda/Uno/Punto gearboxes with different ratios? If there would be a diesel box that could be matched to this engine, topspeed would probably be around 165 to 170 km/h (approximately 105 MPH)

Those are interesting figures.

Was it a 4 speed?

Or originally a 750 (lower ratio differential)??

Or was the clutch slipping???

Looking at the original quoted maximum speeds - which in the lower gears are limited by engine speed -
we see

pandaspeeds.jpg

according to Haynes the ratios are

3.909 to 1
2.055 to 1
1.342 to 1
0.964 to 1
0.723 to 1

So if you take the second gear figures and multiply by 2.055 (to get a figure for 1 to 1 (141.795) and divide that by 0.723 for the gearing up of 5th I get 196.12KPH as the maximum road speed at whatever the maximum engine speed is in second gear.

I'm not sure a standard tune 60 will push the brick shape a Panda is that quickly, but oddly enough ISTR that sort of speed (about 120mph) is what Pete (fixitagaintomorrow) gets out of his 1242 Cinq when it hits the rev limiter[:0]

In any event, either there's something wrong with my figures, or maths:I, or their Panda..

They could test the "swapped" Panda against a 1.1lt one, which's a power of 54Hp... I think the same of the Uno 60's block;)!

Well, I've just been looking through "Haynes" again, and you know what?
There are two sets of gearbox ratios, ignoring final drive ratios, the set quoted above is from the beginning of the book, and relates to the original 903, with a 5.455 final drive.
The later FIRE engined versions have fifth gear of 0.827 with either 3.867 for 999cc or 4.231 for the 769cc.

As the second gear figure is now 2.056, and we do the maths again..

69 x 2.056 = 141.864

141.864 / 0.827 = 171.54 etc..

with 100 kmh equal 62.1371192 mph we get around 106.59 mph at max engine speed.

My apologies to Barry.

It has become awfully quiet around Barry's panda lately.. so far no pictures or further tests have been posted.. I think I should go back to the board and remind him to post more :D

Agreed.

BTW.
Regarding gear ratios:
I understand the "fifth" gear pair on this box is essentially on the "outside" of the orginal four speed 'box (with extended shafts and suitable alterations to the selector mechanism).
The implications of this are that it is not hugely difficult to change the fifth gear pair for the higher ratio set from the earlier Panda (as per my original top speed mistake) - as you don't actually disturb the main part of the gearbox at all.

Search through some of "Blitzens" posts* - his Cinq has had this sort of change, in reverse:D

Usual disclaimers apply:

I have not done this modification.
The Cinq 'box is different.
I'm tired, and may well be talking out of my (insert appropriate portion of anatomy here) |)

hows about on to a four wheel drive panda?

Not my speciality.

AFAIK the easy fit is the FIRE engine.
It goes upto 1242, and somewhere around the 80 odd BHP mark, if you've got the skill, or money, and the room for the 16valve engine with MPI.
In 8 valve SPI form it's around the 60 BHP mark in standard tune.

Also exist the 1.2l Fire engines with 8v head and Mpi injection developing 75Hp...but don't know if so equipped Punto have been sold in UK:I!Then don't forget there's a new fire unit introducted with the last restyling of Punto, it's a 1.4l 16v with 95Hp;)

TBH I'm having a lot of trouble with wheelspin due to all the greasy salt deposits on the road around here at the moment with my 45:I
(which seems to be going quite well currently, and enjoying the cool air)

I'm not sure I'd want a lot more power[:0]

I have the same problem with my 135s! :I Sometimes, she just can't put the power down at junctions and islands [}:)]

can any 1 offer advice on how to get more bhp out of my L reg white panda 1000i fire? i have 14" 5 spoke alloys, neons, uprated gas shocks, uprated spark plugs and leads, blue side repeaters, blue tinted rear lights, debaged, a mesh front grill and 1.5k worth of ice. I was thinking of buying a pipercross PX700 Maximum Flow Universal Filter and removing the standard filter and just laeving the empty air box with the PX700 on the air intake, anyone tried it? Any advive given much appreciated.
