Hi all im back again with another question

I was just wondering how much would i be looking at for a 1.2 8v rebore? i know it wont be cheap but trying get a rough guide to if its worth doing or is it just better scrapping the car?

thanks

zilart

If it needs a rebore the rest of the engine will also be shot.

Replace the engine or scrap the car. If you go for a replacement you need the same model of engine as you have now or the ECU wont work properly. If you cant find exactly the same model you also need the ECU body computer and ignition keys to go with the new engine.

cheaper replace engine, there is heaps of them in scrapyards, also check local ads, might somebody selling for parts with good engine, and able start and run engine.
dont forget do full engine service... good oil, sparkplugs and filters.

good luck

its a shame just to scrap it tho, in the last year iv had alot of work done to it ie

new gear box
head gasket
drive shaft oil seals
new ignation cabls and coils

all seems working im just going threw oil its burning it someware.

how much is a set of standard rings if there is only minimum bore wear and no old time big lip at the top
it used to be about £45 a set for fords and i never went oversize or the rebore route just let them bed in nicely

Haven't seen a rebore on a motor built after 1980 unless it was for increasing capacity for racing. The last time I did anything like it was fitting oversize rings to a worn bore with my fingers crossed. Have you eliminated the valve seals as the culprit? Did you do wet and dry compression? I don't think a rebore is worth it.

I am in middle of redoing my engine, i found oil rings are blocked with some dirt.... very much, if your engine burning oil, it doesnt mean it have to be rebore, more likely worn, broken or stuck oil ring in one of cylinders. engine needs to go out of car, head has to go off, (will have to skim head and new head gasket ), before buying cylinder rings, check bore size, to see if it badly worn. if it is, than go after other engine. If all work you doing yourself, it wont cost anything to you, to split an engine. All parts what you put allready (apart headgasket) will stay.

im not sure what it is, im no mechanic im just learning as i go between the internet and my haynes manual doing what i can my self to save me pennys,

i know i have a small oil leak near my oil filter (the nut just to the left of the filter) but i dont think i would account for the amount of oil ive gone threw, in two months your talking about 4 ltrs

now my head gasket was only done 3 months ago, becase it had gone. so all my cylinders were taken out and pressure checked so id assume that they should be ok in once sence if you can trust the garage to do a good job, they would of told me if there was a problem least id hope they would of it would of ment more money for them.

without making myself sound totaly thick here, if i was to take my plugs out would they be black if that cylinder was burning oil?

we are all still learning. You have high oil consumption and you have checked for external leaks and found nothing significant. Next suspects are valve stem seals or ring/bore wear. First you could pull the plugs and see if any of them are oily. Then you could get a wet and dry compression test done which could eliminate the rings leaving stem seals as main suspects.

when doing headgasket, garage checks only engine head, and there is no need to tak out pistons. pistons always bit black ....is your car smoky when you driving ? kinda blue ish , or black light smoke ? if it does, so more likely oil ring is gone... or stuck, or broken, hard to tell that .... when was oil changed last time ? did you use good oil ? do you use proper oil ? proper grade, but not the cheapest ... to save money, or not to most expensive, thinking you doing better for engine? ... 10w40 is the oil to go, go for most popular name.... i am using castrol magnetic.. make sure oil level is fine. ... not overfilled.... right between marks on dipstick.

if you changed oil recently, suggest you get engine cleaner, or flusher, which suppose to be addon in oil, use it as it states.... if it say worm engine 15 min, than do it... if it say drive for 30 miles , do it, and after that change oil and filter. if all that doesn't help ( i mean still smoky), so than it means oil ring not stuck , it is more likely broken.

from money point cheaper would be engine change

Hi all i think i might have finaly figured out what the problem is, feel kind of thick now.
ive just been looking at my engine and noticed from the rocker cover down over is wet with oil, it looks like the gasket has gone how daft could i be?
looks like i know what im doing when im off.

think i might have to have a good read threw this full site to finding out loads i didnt know.
