I don't know what happened but on the way home today the engine decided it was going to be exceedingly loud, embarrassingly so, with louder knocking noises under acceleration. No warning lights, not sure about loss of power because I was going extra slow to keep the noise down. I did get some super MPG on the way back with going so slow though.

On top of that of the windscreen wash motor has stopped working. It's off to the garage tomorrow to see what happened and hopefully fix it.

Ironic though, that I start to take an interest in the car now (looking in to putting the fog lights back in, maybe get some alloy wheels on) and it craps out on me.

Oil level seems fine. Though I have noticed some oily bits around the engine that I don't remember being oily yesterday, but of course I wasn't looking yesterday.

Well, the cause is now known: The cat has sheared off.

It's such a clean cut that it may be possible to weld it. Just waiting to hear back from the friendly neighbourhood welder before deciding to weld or replace.

Get the cat out the car - remove it from the Engine
get the ""broken" flange off the middle pipe

make sure you clean the whole cat up
Check for any more holes developing
Either you bodge and replace shortly
Repair Properly or Buy new

I'd rather spend a few hours with the wire brush - black Ultra high temp paint and make sure its good as gold to be repaired - then protect the welds up again

There getting to the age now early mk2's that rot is kicking in, holes in cats and exhausts is not uncommon esp since they do get road grit + heat cycled alot

Had it replaced, didn't want to chance a weld. As it turns out it doesn't appear to have been the original anyway. In the mysterious history of the car it was replaced with something else.

The engine is quieter now than it was before and doesn't resonate at 60-65mph anymore, which is nice.
