hi all, wander if somebody can give me a bit of advise.
got a '97 1.8 hlx, got a whining noise coming from engine somewhere, firstly thought maybe alternator bearings but noise stayed same with alternator drive belt off! has anybody else come across this noise sort of whining noise before? i'm thinkin now maybe water pump or timing belt idler bearings. Can't be cam belt tensioner as had new one fitted recently whilst belt was changed.
Anybody help?
Cheers

It can be the tensioner, lots of parts have a factory defect. It would be best to have it checked where you changed the belt just to be sure. Either than that it can be the water pump bearing

Ok cheers m8, don't think its tensioner as noise was there before new one was fitted & at time i assumed alternator, etc. could be problem. thanks anyway, will have tensioner & water pump checked soon.
cheers

a good way to locate engine noises is to go round the engine with a short lengh of 2*2 wood and put the other end to your ear, it acts a like stethascope....just a thought, came in handy for me :)
