Help? I've looked at the spec of my 80sx which says the top speed is 107mph. I feel my car may have been modified in some way as it has done way over this speed. It does seem quite nippy but its the 1st 16v car I've driven.

Being a total novice on engine mods, can i tell if it has been modded before I bought it?

When you say "way" over are you talking 125+? The manufacturers figures on these sort of cars are always conservative to keep insurance costs down which entices more buyers. Also, the cars are built to tolerances which mean you could get a car that is up to 5% better than the average anyway.

If you look under the bonnet, any "mods" should be fairly visable over the standard stuff. Anything that doesnt say Fiat probably isn't standard!

I doubt vey much if anyone has gone to the bother of stripping the eninge out on a 1.2 to put in lightened components, cams etc.

Re: Re: Engine mods

115 - 120 but it may have been downhill, lol.
Whats this ECU thing and a chip I've seen mentioned? Would that be obvious?

Re: Re: Re: Engine mods

The speedo only has to be accurate to within 10% up to 70mph, so there's a good chance your speedo is being a bit optimistic...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Engine mods

Ah well, it was good while it lasted. I can still pretend tho! :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Engine mods

if anyone in scotland is reading this then theyll know what im talking about. we had my mates 1.2 last year travelling by the A9 up to ft william. on the dual carriageway (split level part) we had it at 120. that was verified against a 1.6 fiesta and a 2.8 Golf so i think it is possible. that car was owned from new and completely untouched.

Over 107mph

Now then Lad,

I also have seen that the hand book says 107 mph out of the 80SX. To be honest with you they have told a few porkies regarding this enigne. I got mine on a rolling road and it test to be 85bhp not 80 and I have had mine over 115mph with plenty to go.

Earlier in the forum somebody also has stated that they have had there car above that amount but they ended up foobaring their gear box. As I am not made of money at the moment after paying for a sports clutch, I am not going to try to see if I can beat him.

I can however keep up with my mates VTR on a long hall. He whips my arse off the mark though.

Respect.

Anthony :)

Christmas fairy tale!!!

120mph in a 80 brake bubble car. Dream on / well it is nearly christmas :) :)

Woohoo

So it was true. No mods and it did do what it was saying on the clock!
:)
I'm glad some others have done it too!

Re: Woohoo

Having said that about the speedo accuracy, my 1.2 does seem to fly, but I've not been over a 100. It still pulls like hell, though.

Speedos Lie !!!

It's true that your speedo will be innacurate when it gets towards the top end. 10% out at 70mph is acceptable so once you get up to 100mph you could be 15-20% out, doesn't matter you see as it's an illegal speed so you would never do it..

I used to know (well work with) a bloke who drove everywhere at insane speeds taking the car off the clock (145) on every journey I went on with him - in fourth - nutter !

One day he got pulled on the M6 and his speedo was reading in the region of 120-125 and the officer said he'd measured him doing 108, remember he was well pi**ed at how slow his car was, he even argued with the officer claiming he was doing far faster.

Barakka

PS- Before you say you can't get cars that go that fast... it was a Vauxhall Motorsport Calibra 2.5 V6 (bored out to 2.8) Turbo, 4x4, 6 speed, at £35k.. they only imported about 20 I think, and when his got nicked there were about 4 left in the UK.

Re: Speedos Lie !!!

Hmmm strange thing i read.. ???

i own a bravo80. as to be seen in the register :)
but mine goes upto 170/185 easely... that would be like
120Mph.. so it is duable...
But i have 2 say, i have a K&I filter, and a bigger Exhaust pipe..

That's it, the HGT has gotta go!

If you can get a 1.2 to do 115-120mph and do 40+mpg i'm gonna sell the hgt and buy an 80.
I'm going out in the hgt now, and if i don't see at least 150mph on the clock it's going!
Only joking.
If you can get a 1.2 to go faster than a REAL 100mph i'd be very surprised.
Regards

p.s. you know that saying - "If something seems to good to be true, it probably is." Well i think it speaks volumes.

Re: That's it, the HGT has gotta go!

I'm as suprised as you! I'll brink it along to Wakefield in Feb and we'll give it a test. I just hope that it aint my speedo lying!

try 125mph....

i can honestly say i have done 125mph in my fiat bravo 1.2 80sx. my friend was behind me in his 1.8 focus, and told me, then said he went to 130 to pass me, and trust me, it wasnt a very quick overtake. i often take it to 120, as it really doesnt have much trouble getting there, as long as there's no hills about.

im not sure why people find it so hard to believe, but the engine is a very willing engine and enjoys 6500rpm.
its the same engine as the 1.2punto sporting, proving it is a least nippy. the only thing that lets it down is second gear, as it only gets upto about 57mph, so 0-60 is seriously damaged.

i actually need a new clutch for mine, does anyone know of a sports one for the 1.2 80sx?
thanks...

Re: try 125mph....

I find 130 out of a 1.8 Focus hard to believe. I think some peoples speedometers are telling them porkies!

I think you are absolutely true... My 1.2 16V Punto Sporting mod.'99, does 120 in 6th gear and 0-60 in 9secs. It is normal, except the air induction kit (home made) and Surbo. No gearbox mods though...

120 my arse!

As mentioned before, speedos will not necessarily read correctly at the higher end of the scale. At an indicated 70mph you are probably only doing an actual 65mph. So what do you think you are doing at an indicated 120-125mph?? I would hazard a guess at an actual 100mph. Sorry guys but your 1.2s will not and do not get to an actual 120mph - simple as that. Who's to say that mike's mate in his focus has an accuratly reading speedo? It won't. I had an Astra 2,0 16v sport a couple of years ago - got an indicated 130 on the M65(with more left to go). Got a speeding ticket through a week later for 103mph. There is no way in this world my speedo was reading right - might have been 115mph but not 130.
Regards

Re: 120 my arse!

Oi! Leave it out. Its nearly christmas! Let those of with the 1.2's believe its true :)
