Hey does any one know how to fix the engine light prob on a Grande??

I have taken it to the garage and they plugged it in to the reader thing and there was NO faults on the system. The cars rev counter wont work at all and the car feels sluggish while driving.

Think its gone in to safe drive or some think like that.

any help would be grate thanks. don't have much money anymore as most is going on the wedding.
 
Hi Josh.

If the engine light is on constantly, then i'm pretty sure there has to be a code logged.
With the lamp on, there is a good chance that you are in limp mode.
Although I guess there's also a possibility if the rev counter isnt working, that it could be an oddball electrical fault.
What vehicle is it, ill check elearn
 
hey thanks for reply. its a fiat punto grande 2006 1.2 petrol.

yea that what I thought there has to be a code iv taken it to a different garage now and they have said the same thing there is no code.

This all started after I had a new clutch fitted .

It recently started smelling strongly of petrol when the car is running my mate said It sounds like im flooding the engine could this b a problem??

REV counter not working.
Under Powered and strong smell of fuel.

Could point to a misfire, but without hearing it, it's impossible to say. And with no error codes logged, it's even trickier to diagnose.

How long after having the clutch replaced did this start happening.
Maybe something has been disturbed.
Has the rev counter ever worked or did this stop working at the same time.
And are you sure it's the engine warning light ?
 
It started like 2days after I got it back from the garage
And no the rev counter worked a couple of times but only stayed on for a couple of seconds then my car just cut out.
my car runs now but takes awhile to start the rev counter hasn't worked since
And yea defiantly sure its the engine light.

Im starting to hate this car
 
OK.

One simple little trick, to check for a cylinder misfire.
When the engine is flat cold, and I mean flat stone cold.
Lift the bonnet.
Start it up, let it run for 10 or 15 seconds, Don't rev the nuts off it, just let it tick over, and switch it off again.

Take a look at the exhaust manifold, you should see that it has 4 distinctive sections where it joins the cylinder head. (2 of which are barely visible under the heat shield)
Very, very carefully briefly feel each section. Be really careful, as this could be extremely hot.

All 4 sections should feel the same temperature. If you have one which is substantially colder than the other 3, then you have a misfire, which may explain the poor starting, poor running and fuel smell.
If you feel that it's too difficult to tell the temperature difference, run it for another 10 seconds.
I can't stress how careful you have to be here, this has potential to take your skin off.
That's my disclaimer sorted

I'd also check for split vacuum hoses, which will give off strange fuel/oil smells in the cab.

Also considering there may have been some wiring disturbance with the clutch change, check the engine earth wires. I also believe there is one to the ECU, which can cause erratic problems.

Sorry I can't offer much more at this stage, but i'll keep trying and no doubt others will be along to offer some help.

That only applies to a small number of cars from sept. 2008.


Most obvious thing to check is that the main gearbox earth cable is secure. It's not unusual for fast-fit type garages to leave this loose after a clutch change and can cause all sorts of issues.

Sometimes they may have also caught wiring between the engine block and gearbox bell housing when refitting- most likely the lambda sensor wiring.

However, faults like this should leave an error code logged in the system. Is it a decent diagnostics machine that can interrogate all of the vehicle's systems, or just the Engine ECU? Engine RPM is not sent to the cluster directly, it's transmitted on the vehicle's CAN network and the cluster picks up the info and displays it. If the engine runs, it suggests the sensor is working correctly, so the fault is more likely to be in the cluster- and a basic code reader will likely not be able to read it.
