Hi Thomas, The hinges came from ebay, are stainless steel and are from a boat builder. The holes are countersunk for a flush fit. They are used for wooden doors on boats. Not expensive as I recall

Go to Mechanical Parts> Hinges. Listed are Mini chrome or alloy boot hinges, polished stainless steel hinges and zinc plated steel Lift-Off hinges. Maybe one of these would suit?
There's several other suppliers of parts for Kit Cars who may have suitable hinges also.

Mini hinges will NOT work---they will not fold back far enough to allow for the engine cover to folded back against the rear screen (for when working on the engine)---the Axel Gerstle hinges WILL allow you to do so.

How do you know when the engine/oil is too hot? Without gauges and sensors
I took my 500 for a ride today with the new aluminum 3.5lt sump, new oil, cleaned oil filter, and after a 15 minute drive, the bottom of the sump was like sticking my hand in fire :yum:
It's super hot and humid here at the moment (30c and 100% humidity)

Fiat state in 'the book of words' that the oil pressure light is allowed to flicker when the engine is idling (and hot) and the oil pressure will be about 7psi, as long as the light goes out as soon as the engine goes above idle speed. If your oil-pressure light does NOT come on when the engine is idling, you should have nothing to worry about--don't forget, the original sump capacity was 2-1/2 litres, and you have increased that by about 40% by fitting the 3-1/2 litre sump.

Recently i added a temp gauge on my 3.5 litter sump so let me tell you what is happening at your engine. After about 15 minutes run, oil is reaching 80C. With Outside temp of 28-31C temp is rising at 90C and as long as you car runs at about 60-70 km/h, 90-92C is normal. If you stuck in a traffic or driving at low speeds temp is rising at 100C. This is the top my engine got so far. From 100 if you find an open road temp goes back to 90C
Little car likes to run and don't like low speeds so step on it
My car at about 100c has pre -ignition problems, something a haven't solve completely yet but i am working on it. Thomas
Whilst it's wise to be cautious about engine temperature and a gauge is the ultimate way to be sure about this, I'm sure that when you have one fitted it causes you stress that it's better to be ignorant of. Engine oil can easily cope with 100c and if it quickly reduces on the open road and doesn't keep rising indefinitely I see nothing to worry about, unless you have a compulsive habit of touching the sump. . I'm with Tom in using the oil-pressure light as a temperature gauge; mine never comes on with engine running. As long as it doesn't when the car is in motion I think you're OK.

Anyway to me monitoring the temp and thinking how to drive to cool it down is fun, this car keeps my mind busy proccessing data all the time. I know there is nothing to worry about since those cars can handle it pretty fine.
Hi Thomas, Like me you have an oil temperature gauge and as Tom says the pressure light is the main indicator, but I have had problems in the past with excessive high temperatures 95 - 100degC ALL the time and preignition too.
I now use good fuel and have made sure the ignition is set well and that the distributor is advancing too - so far no preignition I will have to wait until our summer starts and see what the normal operating temps are. It is fun (sort of) to monitor the temp and pressure as i have never owned a car that can get as hot Don't let your car suffer preignition Thomas fix it sooner than later.Ian.

I just wanted to ask you a question in relation to this above you wrote back in 2016!
I have just attached same bottom brackets on my 500 (as per attached photos). And now the top catch doesn’t reach the hoop.
How did you overcome this problem ?

I can’t seem to figure out how to install these with the top catch functioning properly!
Would you be able to share the technique?

Well you have to bend a little the top catch but this type of fixing is not the best. I will very soon install hinges at the top of the hood and put those ABARTH style spacers at the bottom, helps also on maintenance access. Next month my car will have a repaint so I will modify it soon though this post is old, time flies.

Yes, in my case just a little and it was working ok even without the spacers.
