General engine help needed for fiat ducato motorhome

hi, we have a fiat ducato 1983 (a reg) maxi 2.5l diesel motorhome,lhd,column shift. at present it has an (n reg) 2.5l diesel engine.

we are looking for a reconditioned engine as the engine mounts snapped on our 1st trip away & we only got 3 miles from home, as well as this it has a crack in a housing ? dodgy starter motor & no speedo so money & timewise i think a recon engine will be cheaper, so i have a few questions :
1) can i replace it with a turbo 2.5 diesel engine ? ( currently NON turbo) without other modifications i.e new gearbox etc
2) what years of engine would be compatible to replace it with ?
any help would be appreciated

it does not have an (N reg) engine but a 1986 engine in it at the moment

This one crops up from time to time and is of interest to me as I also run an older motor caravan.
If your 86 engine is still a runner it will be much less hassle to source some new engine mountings, starter motor and sort the cracked housing I would have thought. But you need to direct your questions to someone with specialised knowledge re engine compatibility.
A search through older posts may help point you in the right direction.
