Tonight i have fitted a well known tuning box to my croma. But all is not well. The first run, without giving it any welly saw it cut out and refuse to start. Its now been brought back home. The box has been removed along with the wiring harness to each injector. The car is running fine again but were left with an engine warning lamp on.By now it should have seen the fault as being inactive,do the ecu,s fitted have the facitily to self clear or do we need to plug in.Sorry for being blunt, but im just a bit pi..ed off to say the least. My own fault for meddiling. Thanks seth

What was the make of the tuning box, so we all know what to avoid?

Actually I'll avoid all of them - I'm sure if Fiat could get 500BHP out of a 1 litre engine they would.

I assume it was one with something like 7 or 9 settings. If so it's recommended to try it out at a medium setting at the most for the first time. So check that and maybe try again. Your fault light will most likely turn off after 3 driving cycles and if not than diagnostics like fiat examiner or free fiat ecu scan will be needed. I am also curious of the brend and more specs of the box you purchased.

The best tuning solution seems to be to remove the DPF. This requires very specialised remapping of the ecu, and other mods. The only way is to use Alfatune or someone supplied with his system. As Gus is in St Helens and Buster is not too far away perhaps it would be useful to contact him. Plenty of info on alfaowner.com.

£600 here for removal of DPF, EGR and remap...

150bhp becomes 195bhp.

Might be worth getting the backup gearbox and clutch on order first.

I really have my doubts about chipping. Surely the modifiers don't have any access to the source data that generated the programmed maps - this would all be confidential Fiat-owned data. They could only take the Fiat map and jiggle it around a bit, but how would they know how or why the original data was as it was, or what the limiting factors are?

Hope at this price it includes a replacement box/pipe for the removed DPF.

Big concern with any of these tuning mods is insurance.

In the past simple tuning mods when fully declared cost no extra money and you knew you were totally in the clear and fully insured. Problem I/we are all seing is that with a bog standard car one is having change insurers every year just to keep the premiums down. Have any mods then for one year you can probably get a good insurance rate but when the annual massive increases come round shopping for cheaper insurance could prove to be a real problem.

Ok people thanks for all the replies. The good news is the light did go off after 3 duty cycles.
The said module has been sent back, and in all fairness the company who ive dealt with for quite along time did admit to that particular module not being compatible to the car, there is a bit more to it than that but its a long storie.
Anyway a new module arrived yesterday,a totally up to date model, not an R and D version.I just hope a brainbox is with us tonight as this version comes with a throttle reference wire,to tell it when heavy throttle is applied. It connects to the throttle potentiometre signal wire and also each injector solinoid. That is simple enough.Except getting the signal wire in to the cabin.Up to now cant see any grommets or easy options.
So my big question is does the throttle pedal harness go to the body computer and then to the EDC control unit via the CAN network or does the throttle pedal harness go straight to the EDC control unit? The latter would make it alot more easier.
Come on my good brothers enlighten me.cheers seth

looking for a throttle signal i think, ive used these modules before and infact sell them for myself. But the last module i fitted on the stilo never had the reference wire and the ones i sell for commercial vehicles dont use the reference wire although it is fitted but not used.Just think i,ll struggle to find a suitable orifice for the wire to pass through.Reckon it,l take the 2.4 to 250hp and 480nm from 1500rpm.

Quick update if anyone is interested.Fitted the module this morning.Managed to find the throttle signal wire on the pedal(blue, red trace).By chance i thought i,d have alook at the oem harness to the EDC control unit and located the same wire,i checked it then with a multimeter. So basically ive picked up off this wire and each injector plug.Anyway been for a run in the car this morning, runs fine and seems to perform very good, less gearchanges and seems to kick down less.We will see in a couple of weeks with the van behind it.Does anyone know of a good company who could make me a nice stainless exhanst system and i,d get the DPF flashed off? Thanks guys seth

Pleased you seem to have sorted it.

Re Stainless Steel Exhaust suppliers I suggest you do a good long google session, write down the prominent contenders and then do a separate search on each of the guys for problems, customer service etc. You will end up with a list of possible three and after that "best of luck" :)

Thanks again guys,ha ha yeah i should have known that (WOT).The name of the module is steinbauer.Im i ok saying that?Admittedly not as pokey as a remap but as safe as can be,as still use,s the standard map and i say that with all the respect in the world. Thanks boys

I'm sure I read elsewhere on this forum that the exhaust is a Vectra one. Mine has GM logos on it.

Would be worth some further research, especially as Vectras were made before DPFs anyway.

From the wild ideas department - I wonder whether you could avoid paying for the "DPF removal" by getting it remapped by a company that have a map for a pre-DPF 1.9D Vectra?

This is a long shot though. I won't be thinking about this until the DPF packs in.

There was heaps of DPF trouble with remaps when the Alfa 159 arrived, and the remappers were using the existing maps. I had a gt at the time, so plenty of info on alfaowner.com.
