Does anyone know what this could be if you have come across it B4 :bang:

just had cambelt changed could it have somethin to do wit that :worship: Help

Amazing the number of garages that can't seem to do this job correctly.

You do the job, turn the engine over and then - so important- check the timing is still correct. Can't possibly get the timing wrong if you do that

They've only done half the job so you should get 50% of the bill refunded.

It's not just having the alignment tools though, it's using them properly. A lot of these problems with 1.6 belts have been from garages who have the tools but only used them the once just to fit the belt. All they had to do was turn the engine a few times and then reuse the tools to recheck the timing is still correct and it would be immediately apparent that things aren't right. That's standard good practise

So, if you're taking a 1.6 in for a timing belt change, make sure they have the right tools and if the engine feels worse afterwards eg worse tickover, poor pick up in acceleration or engine warning lights always at the same speed, then take it straight back

The timing setting "problems" are really just down to the garage practises and the mechanic. They're not difficult jobs to do at all but yes the 1.2 and 1.4 are very similar set ups so with a similar poorly trained or careless mechanic then they are just as likely to happen.

Just another 10mins recheck whilst everything is accessible would prevent having to do the whole setting up again
