well after stripping it down this is what the problem was. i think we can say the limits of the 1.6 engine have been reached.

anyone care to hazard a guess to what caused it

too much fuel ........ seeps through the rings and contaminates the oil

this will wear out he rings and bores

and corrode the metal

Bit of a guess, but maybe it's been pinking - looks a bit like burning on the piston top.

what would you say it was? tom as to the best of my knowledge nothing got in there and caused any damage. could it be that the ignition timing was/is wrong? as its the only thing i can think of that would melt a piston. although i have never seen one go like this before.

I had a Rover with exactly the same damage. It was caused by cheapo spark plugs. They somehow caused pre-ignition, or as you say, pinking. The plug tips actually melted as well. In the absence of anything obvious, I'd go for over-advanced ignition timing.

isnt bore wash when you go on to many short trip and dont let the engine get up to temp. the fuel makes the bores glaze and the oil control ring cant scrape all the oil off the bores making the engine burn oil
