Technical Engine boring

Technical Engine boring

Having run low on oil -
cam bearings will be shot - head casting is scrap
Crank bearings will be shot and maybe the crank journals as well
Cylinder bores may be scored and pistons may have picked up.

If you want to do a soup up job get a good engine and work from there. You'll need to research how best to gas flow the head, what cams to use and how the get the right ECU remap.

Talking to the guy from the local garage while down at the pub...

he is going to take the engine into the workshop tomorrow. and take it apart and give an estimate to get it running. he is going to give me a list of everything that needs changing. so we will see what happens

he will give me 2 prices. 1 for parts and the other including labour.

any ridiculous price means the engine is off to be weighed in.

I was expecting to change the gasket and cam shaft anyway as part of the lightening and overhaul of the block. but wasn't expecting to find it worn so badly.

my suspicion is that it hasn't ran out of oil. as the sump was relatively full. however i reckon that either the oil filter is clogged up big style reducing pressure to the top of the engine block or that the pump has began to fail for reason X, Y or Z, again reducing the system pressure.

seen it happen before on a VW 1.4 16v block which are known for reliability, so if it can happen to a VW it will happen to a FIAT.... :p

The news so far from the garage with the engine;

Oil pump failing or failed. not pressurizing the system. Oil filter blocked as well. unsure in to what the reasoning behind the failure is.

top end not receiving oil at the correct pressure. wear on top end visible. recommend that majority top end replaced or reseated if wear not visible.

Lower end and cylinder linings are not showing signs of wear.

Head gasket is blowing between cylinders 1 and 2. Gasket has also gone at cylinder 3 blowing outwards. Recommend that gasket is replaced and effected cylinders are cleaned.

I wouldnt trust the head to be much good as the cam runs directly in the parent metal. Any bearing journal damage means the new cylinder head.

It would also be wise to check the main and big end bearing shells but unfortuntaely that may demand new bolts.

Is it worth the bother ?
