Good evening! I have a ‘72 500 that has recently started a strange habit. After driving for about 20 minutes, the rpm’s will drop significantly once I start to idle. When I place it into gear it will not consistently accelerate and will sputter.

Observation: This evening, as I pulled into the garage, pulled out of gear, idled for a moment, the generator light gradually come on and began to sputter out. Simultaneously, I turned off the headlights and it came back to life. I waited a few moments and it idled without issue. I turned on the headlights and it began to sputter out. Once again turning off the lights it came back to life. I did this a few times to verify and each time the same results.

I am new to the mechanic realm so any advice no matter how obvious would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

If you are sure it's not just running rich and choking it's self when stopped?
If tick over slow and battery not fully charged the voltage, the battery voltage could drop to the point it couldn't run the headlights and the ignition, so cut out.
By the way if electronic ignition this can make it more fussy about voltage.
Test the battery and charging system, at least to eliminate them.:)
