basically have run through the options with me pa, and have agreed to replace the unit. Rang round a number of independents, few vauhxhall garage, one of which was adament it wouldn't fit the car as not the same...
Anyway have decided to go for a replacement at £90 inc vat...
As per Radlet, i am going to clean and refurb the old one have a little play about see how it work.
It's the latest in a bit of a line of problems however we want the car at fully fighting strength, looks like he will be wanting to trade it in for the new Alfa Giulietta come summer time maybe...

I bought one from a VX dealer, albeit for my 130 8v Mjet, for £95. I believe some of the 150 16v owners in the Bravo section have gone down a similar route

Ok so now getting a little frustrated with this silly silly thing!
went to get the replacement today and it was totaly the wrong part!! Grr!
So decided to strip it anyway and look to give it a thorough clean as wanted the actual part number from the one specificaly on the car to avoid any further problem when ordering the new one. (again).
So striped it to this point
Now i have given a good clean and the main chamber spring (as in image 2 and 3) was initially a bit stiff and the valve was open slightly. (this has been blanked off for a week and not in use bear in mind).
The top part which splits from the main unit using the torx was a little dirty but the lttle nodger for want of a more techincal term moved very freely with little resistance.
Now at this point i though best not to follow the full guide as my dad was havin a bit of moment with the car in bits and didn't want me to drill the top as per the guide and hit the solenoid out.
Now as the part was moving very well do you think it would be reasonable to assume it is in fact not particularly corroded/sooted and was just the main spring in the chamber needed freeing?

The simple answer to this is try it and see. You could try externally energising/manipulating the solenoid plunger looking/feeling for irregularities. Other than this you will have to refit the valve with a cleaned chamber and see how things go.
I've been quoted 220 Euro for an exchange EGR valve from my local #IAT dealer. I'm tempted but have not checked with GM dealer. Any advice would be appreciated. Also would the exchange unit be new or recon? It's out of warranty now so the spanners are coming out!

The question to ask yourself is why it was stuck in the first place, and the answer is that the bushes that the valve slides in get worn, allowing carbon to get in the gaps and jam the valve. So - even if you clean it up using carb cleaner, the valve will only operate correctly until more carbon gets in and jams it again. Short term fix only I'm afraid - these valves must be regarded as consumable items which is a tad infuriating given their cost :bang:

Right folks I have been looking at the possibility of having the valve blanked off and the ECU re-mapped to accommodate the change.

71751468 which will cost you around the £13 mark
55225287 which will cost you around the £5 mark
I gather both parts are almost or actually identical.
55225287 is listed for use with the later EGR valve, P/N:55215031

Year / plate makes no difference.
The EGR housing to head mechanical interfaces are identical. The later EGR valve is what you would get if your ordered the EGR vavle from your dealer, even if they put the old part number in. I'm pretty sure the parts system will force/advise a superceed to the latest.
I'm guessing the more expensive EGR plate was and early limited quantity production to help customers with EGR problems. Later did(?) Fiat decided to revamp the whole system with new EGR valve and the later bullet price. This would require larger production, falling costs etc.
If I were you I would go straight for the later cheap plate.
Sadly I've already got the later more expensive plate instock for when I to get my hands dirty.

Well folks the plot thickens. I am going to have to buy a new EGR valve. I have trolled the t'internet and am totally confused. According to EPR the part no. for a Croma EGR valve is 55194735 (the 120bhp 8v is 734).
However I have seen a variety of part numbers bandied about 55204250, 55215031, 55215032 etc. etc. Now I think that all these part numbers must vary according to manufacturer (even though it is the same part).
Now some people have been telling me that it is the same part irrespective of which version of the engine you have, even though they are listed as different part number by FIAT and Vauxhall.
However, I have a copy of the Pierburg catalouge which shows they are differnt part numbers. THe original Pierburg number for the 16v 150 bhp is 7.00063.10.0 and for the 8v 120 bhp it is 7.22946.38.0.
Right I am off to cross reference these numbers. Stay tuned for further info

I've just banged off a Technical Support query directly to Pierburg in Germany. If/when I get a response I'll put the details up here.
Meanwhile I would suggest/ask that nobody else write/ask Piergurg at the moment. If they get more than one enquiry then they may not be too pleased.

I've had a very quick and informative reply from Pierburg.
The points to note are:
1) Pierburg part 7.00063.10.0 is the LATEST part for the After Market and is the same part for Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Saab, Opel and Vauxhall have as their OE-Version.
2) From the list of previous Fiat part numbers I supplied it was confirmed that they are old versions of the valve but information on what design changes were made were not available to my contact.
3) Pierburg have had no problems with the solenoid, the valves, the springs or anything else.
4) Problems people are having is due to pollution of the valve and this is down to ECU maps and not the EGR valve iteself
5) They have had no After-Market valves returned under warranty since its availabiity in the After-Market program.
From the above response my EGR strategy will be as follows:
a) Buy a new Pierburg 7.00063.10.0 valve from the cheapest source I can find.
b) Fit the Fiat bullet restrictor plate, obviously introduced to reduce pollution of the valve
c) Fully dismantle and clean the old valve, polish sliding parts etc. and put in the boot of the car with the spare wheel as a backup part for on road events.
To me it seems there is no point is messing with back level valves. Bite the bullet get the new latest valve, fit and hopefully forget.

I believe there is a difference between 8v & 16v units - they are entirely different castings. A good starting point is the ePer - but a 2010 version (& NOT the old 2005 FF version) - that will show all EGR mods from 2005 to 2010.

Pierburg make parts for manufacturers like Fiat, BMW etc.. They don't initially make them for the aftermarket. I assume they make a later decision to also supply the aftermarket. And in any case there is no aftermarket when they are designing parts for vehicle manufacturers.

Right folks I've fitted the new valve and everything works fine, so it seems that the part number is irrelevant, all that matters is that you get the right one for the 8v or 16v. These are not interchangeable as the castings are different.
