Now as the part was moving very well do you think it would be reasonable to assume it is in fact not particularly corroded/sooted and was just the main spring in the chamber needed freeing?

Thanks for that. I take it that as mine is an 05 on a '55 plate it is likely to be the former (and more expensive - ain't that just the way) version.
