55 Croma II 1.9/16v 150hp – bought Sep 09 (39.4K mls) with history of a replaced EGR unit around Apr/May 09 (35.6K mls).

Feb 10 (47.2K mls) - [check engine] warning revealed as `P0401: insufficient EGR flow.’ The EGR fitted was found to be a recon 55204250 unit and a clean-up & re-fit hasn’t been a success.

I’ve a new 55215031 unit on stand-by – but no gaskets. I believe the latest* smart move is to fit the `swirl mod’ 55225287 Gasket (square-ish red sealant type with metal insert c/w 4 `bullet’ holes) to improve flow & lessen soot build-up.

Q1 My understanding is that the `swirl’ mod on the 1.9/16v 150hp only applies to the square-ish gasket & there’s no change involving the other standard 46773082 gasket – is that correct?

Q2 Any folks experienced any problems with the mod? (I understand some Vauxhall folks adopting this Alfa/FIAT mod have had problems- e.g. warning lights, software).

* Prior to the 287 – some folks have been using the 71751468 metal plate with a single 55191883 gasket, or the 468 in an 883 sandwich … or some battle-damage repair of their own (e.g. sardine can, beer tinnie, etc).

I have no idea what this swirl gasket 55225287 is at all. I have the bullet home 71751468 bullet hole gasket in stock ready to install when I get EGR problems.

If your EGR valve is in good condition (including the solenoid internals) and the low EGR fault is raised I would be tempted to add another bullet hole to the blanking plate.

i bought a 55225287 from fiat as well, not fitted it yet but will try possibly tomorrow.

55225287 is the same as 71751468 but costs only £4.50 inc VAT instead of over £13 for the latter.

The 55215031 EGR was fitted this morning - c/w the 55225287 (avoids the 55191883+71751468 combination) gasket & a standard 46773082 gasket. No flightdeck warnings, but then Sooty (the mechanic) flight tested it – returning to base with +13 mile on-the-clock, & av.mpg down to 28 from 33.

If it aids any (1.9/16v 150hp) member running towards the EGR problem – I took a note of all the `numbers’ on the 55215031 unit …

why you replaced the whole egr valve?

why you replaced the whole egr valve?

The failing EGR was a recon 55204250 fitted at 36.5k mls by the previous owner. Thinking was, given a clean-up & re-fit wasn’t effective – then the electronic end was suspect. So fitted the 55215031 later model with re-designed gasket.

I’ve salvaged the 55204250 & have another pair of gaskets. Is this recoverable as a working unit?

yeah, it should be

you have to dismantle the solenoid bit, which is quite easy and give it a good clean with the sand paper, it will be like new(y)
i can e-mail you the pdf guide if you want to play with it
