Hi I've been living with a rough running problem for ages now, I have tried various things as recommended to me on here but it still persits:mad: It's a 53 plate elx Diesel and runs like a pig under 2000 rpm (worse when cold) It runs like a dream over 2000 rpm. It has a very lumpy tickover and when you hold the revs at say 1100rpm the car shakes, it's that lumpy! I have a fair bit black smoke also on acceleration. I have no warning lights on the dash and she starts first time all the time. Could the EGR valve be at fault causing rough idle? Any other comments welcome as I'm loosing the will now:( It's a shame as the rest of the car is great and I love it. Cheers Paul.

It could be the egr,but they are not quite the right symptoms you describe. Mines the same model and the egr is pretty fiddly to get off. I needed a replacement as cleaning it didn't work, the soliniod was rusted inside.
Another suspect is maybe a defective injector, best advice is get fault codes read with fiat ecuscan and a £10 lead off eBay,it may point straight to the problem

- did you ever do as suggested here ?

To eliminate the EGR, undo the hose (silver concertina thingy) that runs from the EGR to the inlet manifold, only two hex bolts.
Remove the metal gasket and make a blanking plate using the gasket as a template.
Put the blanking plate back and if it now runs ok, it's the EGR, you can run like this indefinitely.

No chance its the crank pulley causing the lumpiness??
From reading up on multipla stuff they go quite often and can give off a few tremors!!

Prob not your prob but would be easy check...pop off the auxilliary belt for a few minutes

might not be the egr. Try unplugging the maf sensor on the intake side. This is easy. It worked for me and cured the problem. I replaced this part but it made no difference. What was actually at fault was the MAP sensor(manifold air pressure) Its on the intake manifold and is straight forward to remove if a little fiddly. I replaced this and it cured the fault. Symptoms were just the same as yours. When I took the old one out I noticed it was bunged with sludgy oil stuff.
Probably could have cleaned it and given it a go. I had to replace the turbo on this car a little time previously and suspect the turbo failing over a period was probably what caused the blockage.

Well I got the MAP sensor off today and it was full up with black sludge, cleaned out and put back, but it's still the same:bang: I also unplugged the MAF sensor and this made no difference to the running either. Oh well thanks for the suggestions. I still have to blank the egr to see if this helps.

I replaced the map sensor. I'm not sure cleaning would make any difference. Once the damage is done if you see what I mean. It is a sensitive device after all! Lol. It may be like me you have to replace maf and map at some point. I like you was convinced that it was the egr and if simply unplugging the maf doesn't stop the problem then it may well be the egr after all. Sorry it was album steer. Good luck.

Lobbed in my blanking plate last night.
Definitely sharper throttle response from low down...you know when your in 2nd gear going over speed ramps it pulls away a little cleaner.

Pipcars
Did you resolve your rough running?
Mine shakes a bit too at about 1100 rpm under no load.
Maybe it's characteristic of this engine?
Cheers
Marty.
