ATM, a post can be edited by its author 3 hours after it is first posted. Personally, I think this is a bit short; some people may want to edit a post made the night before for example. A fair few other forums I know of have no restriction on a user editing their posts.

The same thing could also be said for the gallery. I'm sure there are users who have pics in their gallery which are no longer of use but aren't needed on the forum (e.g. pictures of stuff for sale) I appreciate that some pics would want to be kept on the forum (e.g. for How To threads) so maybe those pics could be moved to a specific, non editable section of the gallery?

And while a mod to do the above it might be easier for them if the user could do it themselves?

What does everyone else think?

Sorry no can do. The editing rule is there to stop people typing things, then editing after someone else has already replied (denying something for example).

The gallery issue is due to people uploading, linking to a photo, then deleting it thus really mucking up the forum.

Plus of course, certain people getting in a huff one day and deleting everything .....

It's no bother to email a mod to ask ;)

i agree it doesnt work for everyone but past events have shown what happens on threads when people argue and can delete. if you need an edit/deletion then the report button is there for alerting the section mod.
you know like if you crashed your car and then left the scene and hid.then posted on a forum about it.
the moderators could move that out of public view for you

Aye, I agree with that - I wasn't saying do away with the whole thing but maybe extend it to say, 24 hours? And if it was an arguement, then I think it's likely that edits such as you describe would be within the current 3 hour window anyway.

Aye I agree with that too. However, not every single photo in the gallery has a use. That's why I suggested having a user editable section and a non user editable section in the gallery. Don't know if it's workable, but it's an idea :)

True, but I'm sure that they have better things to do :)

Also, who could do editing in a section for which there is no mod? Supermods and Admin?

any section with no mods then just report it as normal.it will still get seen to
even if you want to get say get a photo edited you can pm any mod or use a report button in any thread really.
if you were doing this then include the picture url and be specific on the picture

could there not be a report to moderator button feature in the gallery then.

and you get an drop down box to display whats wrong (content, porn etc.) and a box to write a sentence about why you want it gone?(y)

I dont mind about the editing of post, I'd just set it to that once someone has posted it cant be editied again.

But I would like the gallery back to the way it was.

They are MY images, not the forums. Even though I am a member, and the forum is graciously hosting them, they are still mine. I should be able to delete them as and when I see fit. Bearing in mind that 99% of my images arnt put into posts.

Its all well and good getting a mod to delete it for you, but it doesnt let me feel in control of my own images.

I have to say this is the reason I continue to use photobucket, rather then the FF gallery.

Me and Stu had an idea about this - which I'm looking into.

Basically I need to run tests on how long it takes to scan all the posts in the forum to see if an image is linked. So when you go to delete, it could check if it was linked, then only allow deletion if it isn't.

Problem is, although the table is indexed, it still needs to scan 1.5 million posts each time - not a problem for one or two deletions, but if there is mass deleting going on ...

It would be easier to reverse tag (ie everytime you make a post, it flags the photos in the db which are used) - although the problem there is that any current photos won't be flagged.....

Let me think about this ;)

if bens idea works then great however you do see the logic of it?
would people prefer no images be hotlinked in threads and only attachments?
