Technical ECU Reprogramming

I have a 2018 Fiat Tipo 1.4 Easy Sedan and the ECU needs to be replaced. I purchased a new ECU but my auto electrian says it is for a diesel. Can the diesel ECU be reprogrammed for a petrol or can it be used to clone the damaged ECU?

No it will likely have vastly different hardware inside
The pinouts on the connector are likely completely different as well
