My poor car has been out of action since Xmas now and I cannot face another day on the bus! My car went into the garage to have a burnt valve replaced and its never worked since! 2 auto electricians have been out to her and said they think the ECU is broken. The car runs for 10 mins then just cuts outs. After leaving it for a while you can run it again for 10 mins then it cuts out. Before reaching their result of "its the ECU" I was paying out for new bits left right and centre. Now Im loathed to pay out anymore as I just dont have the money for it. The ECU has been removed now and Ive read about their being a common problem with dry solder joints once inside the board. Ive rung a few people from the web who will rebuild my ECU for £100 roughly. If its a case of just a dry joint I can get that fixed at work for free. Only problem is I cant open my ECU. I have had the 4 screws out but it just wont seperate! Has anyone got an idea of how to open it? Its for my Punto 1.2 2000 and the part number is IAW 59F M2. Like I say at work we have a team of electronics people who will look at the circuit board for me but we cant seem to get it open! Please advise!

I’d suggest leaving it alone, as the video shows, even once open the board is incased in A clear resin you would need to chip this off to reach the board and the not damage any surface mount parts in the process, you could attempt to reflow it by throwing the whole thing in the oven but to be honest these cars are so cheap now and you’ve already had a lot of other problems you could be throwing good money after bad at it (especially if it’s had major engine work) just to ultimately have to replace it anyway. If I were you I’d put that £100 towards another car.

another Option would be an ecu replacement off eBay, you need to get the whole set with body computer and keys but it might work out cheaper than having an ecu rebuilt. To be honest even a new ecu for this car might be in the £100 price bracket now as demand has dropped off and people will be happy to get rid of old stock
