I see you can buy these chip tuning kits off ebay. Are the safe enough or could i do some damage to thea old jtd ecu.

what one are you looking at?

Remember that a lot of these are resistor boxes etc. If its a genuine OBD ECU remapping tool, it'll likely cost a few bob!

If its a tuning box like this for approx £150 - £200....

Then its safe. You plug it in when you want extra power, unplug it when you dont want it or when you sell the car. Unlike a remap it will give you safe additional BHP approx 20-30BHP and unlike a remap you can turn it off and again unlike a remap you can resell it.

If its one of these, worth £0.05, which are sold by the bucket loads on ebay claiming additional 20BHP .......

Then no, its just a resistor. :)

Think he's talking about the kind that flash a new map to your ecu, ie you connect them to a laptop and flash a new map on that way.

just a remap is perfectly safe, but DIY kits can have their troubles. As above, if its a proper unit then you shouldn't have any troubles...

I can only assume then your after the KWP2000 or similiar. Its not safe or should i say fool proof no, as you can mess up the ECU with the wrong map. They however if you used correctly will map your car without problems.

One thing to note is the maps that come with it may not be the best optimum map, i.e those maps are from cars that may of had performance enhancements already fitted before the remap or the car wasn't well maintained (servicing) or the car had unknown problems to the driver before the map was taken. They wont be fine tuned maps. However the majority are good old 20 -30 BHP increases maps that'll fine and will pay for the unit. Get some friends to chip in and do there cars aswell. But make sure you have the original MAP available so that if it makes the car worse you can revert back.

if its an ebay kwp flasher be careful, the software you'll be supplied with off ebay is a load of crap, and is difficult to use. it wont do checksum correction either, and those generic maps on the ebay CD's are badly done. Its always best to use your original map, and get it tweaked. dont expect to go on any tuning forums either, the first thing you'll be told is "ask your supplier" - they intensely dislike chinese clones..

Thanks

its the kwp2000 plus ecu flasher thats on ebay for about 90pound.
It says it does it Fiat Bravo/Brava 1.9 JTD Bosch EDC15C7.would it be reversable if it stuffed up.

thats waay too much to pay for a cloned KWP, IMO. if the flashing process fecks up (unlikely but not unknown given the quality of the connectors etc) you'd get a dead ECU which can only be fixed by desoldering the flash and programming externally. better to talk to a good/experienced tuning crowd e.g. angel tuning and do a proper remap based on your own existing map..

or just get a second chip from a scrappy and flash that, if it ****s up just pop the original chipo back in. i kept the original ecu chip from my first hgt for this very reason.

The dear old ebay KWP2000 ECU wreckers are poorly made copies. We get around 2-3 people a month contact us and ask if we repair ECU's after they have screwed theirs by trying to use them
The other thing is that no decent tuning company would sell you a map to use with the things, in fact I dont know many bad ones that would either!
The trouble you will also have with the ebay CD ****e is that you have no way of comparing it for definite that the mod file is the mod file for your original - this is the biggest mistake most people make as the see their car and assume its the right modified - there can be lots of different software builds even on the same model and if you load the wrong one - you stuff it, it wont always allow you to relaod the original as it cannot ID the ECU.
People have had success.... but not many and if you stuff it, there are few people that will help you.
If you want the job done properly with the correct equipment then get a professional company to do it, the end cost is cheaper!
If you are a BOO member we will repair the ECU and do it for you for £400 if you stuff it ;)

dont know if this is any help?

i bought an abrieb tuning chip from ebay for 60 quid to fit to my marea 110. i took it apart to see if it was just a resistor inside before fitting it. it had a proper little circuit board inside. after fitting the difference was quite good, i notice that the low down grunt is quite good. i took the marea for it's m.o.t. but took out the chip first and ran it for a day without it. passed the m.o.t. and re-ftted the chip. the difference was very noticable without the chip so it is now in place till the next one.i have no idea what if any the long term effect of this chip will have on the motor but i am happy with it at the moe. i would say it is a good way to increase the power for little money. i would be intersted to hear opions from others.
