I was planning on getting Red Dot pads and discs for my 1.8HLX. However, a friend of mine gets a discount at a local garage/performance centre. They don't do Red Dot discs but they will do EBC discs and pads for about £125. Are EBC brakes any good or are the Red Dot ones the better option. To be honest i'm fairly happy with the standard brakes but the discs are rusting away rapidly so need replacing so I thought it better to get some uprated discs which'll look better behind the 17s i'll soon be getting. I think I prefer the look of the EBC discs... What do you guys think? Has anyone else fitted EBC discs and pads?

Also, if I fit 17s and drop it using the Bilstein Sprintline kit, I know the ride will be rougher but how well will the car cope with speed bumps and multi-storey car parks. (Both of which I can't avoid!) How many passengers can be carried?

Sorry to be a pain and ask questions so early in the morning!

Cheers

EBC brakes

Put it this way i have 17's and a kit and if im 5 up going over speed ramps i bottom out every time thats with the car not being lowered.

Red dot are better than EBC. EBC are only good if you don't want your wheels going black with brake dust, other than that they are not that good.

I can help you out a fair bit here as I've had both types of disks and pads on my bravo

the EBC turbo grooved disks and green stuff pads are fantastic value for money, I got about 30,000 out of the green stuff pads and felt that they provided gooduprated breaking power. The cost was about £100 for the disks and the pads

I have recently uprated my disks and pads to 305mm red dots

and with out doubt they are better but for nearly 200 quid in disks and pads plus the massive breaking surface area they should be alot better shouldnt they! lol

I also remember Si had a HGT with red dot disks and pads all the way round and he was never really happy with them, although they did look very nice indeed!

for value for money go for the EBCs you'll be happy with the extra stopping power for sure

hope that helps you bud

i put Reddot 6 grove disks and pads all round on my alfa 145 cloverleaf. and i am well happy with them.
its worth paying the bit more for a better disks and pads.

Rob, Si put the 20 groove discs on his HGT and they are not recomended for road use.

Humps n bumps!

From the archive of experience afforded me so far, by others on here, I understand now that lowering is more an issue of clearance than anything else. If your cars loaded, going over speed bumps at speed will have your wheels touching your aches (wearing the tyres) whether your car is lowered or not.

BUT, if it is lowered (regardless of how many people are in it)and you don't have sufficient clearance to get over those twattin lumps they put down, then I'd be crossing my fingers you don't leave something behind if you take one with your wheels astride it!

Re: Humps n bumps!

i put caravan spring asistors in my rear springs of my bravo. they keep the same hight, and you wont bottom out with a full load.

Humps & Bumps

Thanks for everyone's help.

However, i'm getting a bit concerned now! I'm going to order the suspension and tyres tomorrow. (Need to do this now as MOT's fast approaching and the standard rear shocks are leaking) I was under the impression that 17x7's with 205/40-17 tyres would fit fine, even with a 35-40mm drop!

I only carry rear passengers occasionally. I don't mind slowing down to a crawling pace for speed bumps but I do need to have access to a multi storey car park with quite steep inclines. Will this still be ok? (I don't have any bodykit, splitters, diffusers fitted)

Re: Humps & Bumps

I have a full abarth body kit, reger rear appron, its lowered on Eibach springs (i believe 35mm) and i have 17's....never rubbed...even had 4up last night and still nothing! but make sure your alloys have the correct offset, if they are the correct offset then they wont rub!!!i give you my word! but i do have to slow down for speed bumps, but with the harder ride you will instantly slow down anyway!!!

Hope this Helps

17s

Cheers Paul.

As for the offset - if when ordering the wheels I state what car they are for (i.e. a Fiat Bravo) won't they make sure they give me the correct offset.

Or is this not always the case?
