Ebay and chips

Any one know how the performance on a Stilo engine would be affected/effected [Never could remeber which] if i got a ECU Chip off Ebay?

They seem cheap cheap, with the addage "you get what you pay for" suely these aren't a good buy.

Some of them claim to boast up to 20BHP, just wanted to know if this would make a difference at all?

I'm going to be getting a K&N or Pipercross Induction kit, would the chip's effect be increased with the kit?

Thanks for any help, I'm new when it comes to cars, and a tad stupid normally!

Search the forum, they are a complete waste of money and a rip-off. If you're going to get your car chipped, get it done properly. it saves the heart-ache later

This comes up loads here, they are just 10p resistors and will not boost your performance at all.

these chips are just resistors that fool the ECU into thinking its always cold starting.thus it pumps in more fuel for the cold start.
not good for mpg or your engine. plus the ecu will adapt and you will have no change.

as for 20bhp it ludicrous
go the traditional tuning routes for proper bhp

Bit of a darth vader post there! "nooooo etc etc"

But propper tuning? Isn't that a TAD expensive? Bare in mind the Induction kit at £60-£70 is expensive for me!

Of course it is expensive

But it's either proper tuning or no tuning, the 'chip' (read resistor) will do nothing.

i've no clue on this, but still if you want tuning done get it done properly, coz as with anything, if you go the cheap option, cut corners, you'll pay more in the long run.

If you wanna get the gains and are short on cash, get the K&N and save up for the next thing...

No tuning it is then! Unless I cn find a nice friendly mechanic that knows what they are doing and will do it from the kindness of his own heart, Or failing that a 24 pack of his/or her choice!

you seem quite keen on the idea, go ahead buy the resistor i say, destroy your engine over time, and then buy a replacement, a much better way of doing it than a proper tune up.....and you get to argue with a blank email over compensation, what could be easier

Buy a performance filter, one for the standard air box. 'bout £30, makes a difference.

How much difference as im seriously considering the K&N kit

It'll give you a few extra bhp and make the car more responsive. If the K&N were to give you say 4bhp at a guess, you'd prob'ly get in the order of 3 from a panel filter.

The advantage of a panel filter is that it's dead easy to fit and still looks standard.
