I've read the guide on here and it doesn't seem specific to the 1.8, neither does the Haynes. A google search threw up that the 1.8 only has one bleed screw on the radiator so whats the easiest way to empty, refill and bleed the cooling system?

Just follow the haynes manual. The JTD has a drain screw on the radiator but on some models taking the lower hose off completely is the quickest way to drain the system. Remember to remove the expansion tank cap before emptying and make sure your heating is on max heat. So its fully open.

Then drain. Remove bleed screw/s. Wait till its empty. Run a hose pipe through the system if you want, let it drain off. Refit lower hose or drain screw. Start refilling until it starts to bubble out of the bleed screw, make sure the air bubbles stop coming out of the bleed hole and it becomes a constant dribble before you tighten the bleed screw/s. Run car for a bit to pump the water round while constantly topping up. Check the bleed screws again to release excess air.

Thats about it.
