Technical Ducato Diesel fumes

I hope this is normal. I have just bought a 2.5TDI motorhome. Only just driven it for only 20 miles so I am a novice!
When I start it I get loads of fumes and smoke from the exhaust. I take it through the gears and I still get smoke then when cruising there is none. It is 1998 and only done 10700 miles.
I haven't been on a decent run yet - so it may sort itself as it has been standing for 6 months. However if it smokes like this on a campsite when leaving early in the morning I don't think I'll be popular!!!
Any thoughts?

try to change oil , oil filter , air filter and clean the intake / air sensor

Thanks for the advice, but when I bought it it had a full service!
