Hi,
does anyone know of a good experienced 1996 fiat ducato 2.5tdi diesel timing specialist in the north east?
i need the pump timing setting up accurately as i believe it wasn't done after a timing belt change.
i primarily need someone who actually "knows" these old Fiat ducato's.
i'm willing to travel if i really have to.
thanks in advance.

You probably need an old school commercial vehicle garage or a Bosch Diesel Diagnostic Agents as it involves the dial gauge in the back of the pump etc.
Was it you I uploaded the cam belt and pump timing information to before?

Hi Mike,
yes that's exactly what i need.....there must be someone around?
no it wasn't me you uploaded to.
thanks.

It may take a search but on the last couple of months I contributed to a post giving timing belt details, but also injector pump timing specs and how to do it with a dial gauge in the hole at back of pump where pipes come out.
If you have clear timing marks accessible at crank pulley that are accurate , then it is possible to check using a timing light and sensor from Number 1 injector.
No good to you but I have a Bosch Timing light/sensor and rev counter unit.:)
Pic below shows 20 degrees of advance @3690 Rpm on Sofim 2.8 in my boat on my Bosch kit around 26 knots.:)

Hi Mike, thanks, but i'd rather pay someone specialized to do this as i don't have the equipment anyway.

So try and find a listing for a Bosch Diesel Diagnostic centre maybe, or an old school commercial garage.:)
tried loads of different so called bosch diesel experts in the north east.......iv'e now given up since the last one i had to explain how it's done!!
surely someone on here knows someone somewhere (who still has a pulse) who knows how to set an old school 1996 sofim fiat ducato 2.5tdi injection pump timing??

You mean if the computer doesn't tell them what to do they are stuffed.:(
Incidentally what are the symptoms that you are getting since Cam belt timing was done?

quite a lot of unburnt diesel at start up.(it's not the timing advance wax stat) she runs fine and clean when warmed up and she is a little bit thirsty'er and slightly less powerful than she should be. (not that it would be anything near economical or sporty anyway!) :)
the timing belt kit was fitted by the previous owner, and the garage that fitted it are more modern day! (they would not have reset the pump timing or known they had to) (and i just want to check it anyway to make sure)
I've just ordered a diesel timing kit off ebay and will be doing the timing myself. (after googling it seems quite a simple enough job)
thanks mike.

Let me know if you need anymore details.
In fairness assuming cam belt timing was done correctly with all the locking/timing pins in etc. I have not found injection timing to be an issue generally.
So my first port of call would be rechecking the cam belt timing is correct.
On my Ivecos overall fuel economy including runs and town use on the 3.5 tonne ones was 24Mpg including towing 3.5 tonnes, generally I found the Ducatos to be more economical with that sort of use around 30Mpg as a lighter monocoque chassis vehicle, though I am sure many owners will claim better figures.;)
If you are not getting full turbo boost that will kill the economy as well as performance as you know.

Hi Mike, one other thing, I've just discovered the wax stat that advances the pump timing when cold has failed again.(maybe that's why so much smoke from cold?) i intend to remove this and fit a choke type cable to manually adjust it when cold. (those wax stats are rubbish!!) when manually pulled should it advance so its all the way open or only partly open? there's probably a full inch+ of movement possible. (if anyone has a working wax stat could they let me know the opening gap/distance from stop?) mine worked warm equals wax stat cable fully relaxed, cold equals cable pulled tight. (some others work the other way.)
thanks.

You may find this Motor Roam article helpful. Permanently advanced ignition could result in an increase in fuel consumption.

Whilst a proper working wax stat advance set up is best for smoother cold start running etc. If you look on my middle photo above you may see that nether the flame device or the wax stat are connected, the only connection id the solenoid on off wire and I used that boat all year around for over four years with no issues re starting or smoke even when ice on boat.:)
