Technical ducato 2.8 jtd 2003 wipers not parking

hi,the wipers are not parking or working on intermittent and slow wipe. working on fast and wash wipe .any ideas please

I have exactly the same problem with the 2002 model. Does anyone have any ideas please?

I would be looking at the wiper relay. However, don't ask me where it is!! I've just come on the forum to find out where the indicator flasher and relay are! good luck, cheers Steve

Where do they "Park" I would be looking at the motor itself, maybe a strip down and clean of the contacts.

Digger58 - they don't park, we have to manually switch them off at the bottom otherwise they just stop wherever they are on their sweep when we switch off.
We've changed the motor and that made no difference.
Stevebill - you're right - where is the relay! Found loads of them under the fuse box, but none of them seem to make any difference to the wipers when removed. We still have full speed wipe, so clearly not found the right one...
Are thinking that the problem maybe in the wiper stalk? Looking at £65ish for a new one, but would love to rule out the relay first as I'm guessing that would be so much cheaper.
Would be grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction.
It's a Ducato 2.8 jtd 2001 model.

You have to dismantle the motor and clean / grease the contact internally, if they are badly corroded then you may need to use fine sandpaper.

actually, I have to amend my original post - sorry, I misinterpreted my other-half's mutterings :-(

What we have is:
Intermittent wipers that are on constantly - so the wipers do move!
Slow and fast settings work as they should.
Auto-park, doesn't work - the wipers just stop wherever they are when they are switched off.

We've replaced the motor with a new one and it made no difference.
We've cleaned up the connections in the old motor and retried that and still no difference.
We've replaced the stalk with a new one and it makes no difference.

In that case you have a wiring issue between pin 2 of the stalk and pin 6 on the motor should be a grey/black wire. Check for continuity with a multimeter. If theres no/poor condictivity then theres an intermediary connection under the dash might need cleaning / reseating its an enormous 40 pin thing.

I had this problem on a 2003 Ducato motorhome. Don't throw any more money at it until you have followed my instructions.


Disconnect the wiper linkage at the motor (make sure it is in the 'park' position otherwise you could lose a finger with the spring tension). Try moving the linkage and wipers to see if they are free. If you have any doubt that they may not be, remove the whole lot by loosening off the nuts just below the wiper arms. Polish up the pins that the wiper blades attach to, grease and refit.


Mine had gone tight in the 2 bushes that the wiper arms swivel in. Once eased, they worked perfectly for a long time until I sold the motorhome.

Ecunotemu - having spoken with my husband, he says that the voltage measured on pin 6 was 10v compared to 12.25v on the other pins, so possibly as you suggest there is a bad connection. Could you tell me if the 40-pin connector is on the driver or passenger side please?

It over the left hand shock absorber in the left hand drive, might be moved in the rhd.

I just noticed that you said 2002 in the first post and 2001 in the next the wiring I gave is for the facelift 2002 model, I don't have the wiring diagram for the older model. I'd guess the wiper motor is the same though so still pin 6 for park.

many thanks to you Ecunotemu :worship: - we finally traced the wire and found the intermediate connector. It was under the glove compartment, behind the dash on the LHS. After checking voltage and resistance on all the wires between the stalk and the motor, we narrowed the problem to the dark blue wire and found a faulty connection in that intermediate connector. We bent the pin out a little more and it solved the problem!
I suspect that it all occurred when we fitted a new radio and aerial, and wasn't noticed until the next rainy day!
So I hope this thread is of some use to someone else and saves them money.

1. If you read post #16 above, it should be clear that the problem was traced to a faulty intermediate connector behind the dash.

2. Given the age of the vehicle, this thread must relate to the earlier x230 variant, while I would expect yours to be an x244, as is mine.

The wiring will differ in detail between the two variants.

If you are in any doubt as to which variant you have check the VIN number which can be found either on the VIN plate, immediately under the bonnet (hood), or in the vehicle registration documents. It will have the format xxx244......., or xxx230.... (The VIN number for my vehicle starts ZFA244......)

3. Perhaps you have not noticed that I have replied at length, to your last post "#9" on your thread "Ducato 2.8 2005".
