Hi, Can you help me pleeeeeese. Sorry if this is a bit long, but the history may be important

I have a 2007 LWB Fiat Ducato 3.5 120multijet

I bought this secondhand early this year and did about 1500 miles absolutely trouble free until I took it in for some body work damage repair and from the moment I picked it up the problems started.

On the day I went to collect it, the engine management light came on and it would not start. It did eventually start but the revs were rising and dropping andthe accelerator pedal had no real effect on the revs. The bodywork shop put their handheld diagnostic machine on it and it came up as an accelerator switch fault (dont know code number). They said it was probaby workshop paint dust in the switch or damp from when they jet washed it and it probably just clear itself. It didn't.

Within a few miles the acceleartion became erratic, rising and falling of its own accord.

I took it to a (supposedly) Diagnostics Specialist garage where they said it was the accelerator switch which they replaced along with a new wiring piece and connector as the new modified switch had a different connection. Total cost with labour, parts & vat £600.

50 miles and two days later problem came back. Towed back by AA to garage.Fault codes now showed PO 089. PO 230 and PO 641 after 3 weeks in garage they cleared the faults having fitted a new under bonnet fuse panel which they thought may be the problem because of water ingress and corrosion. Further cost with parts, labour (staring at it!) & vat £300.

Next day the same problem came back.

I went to my local friendly garage where the owner (who is more mechanical than electrical) and he said "Have you had any welding done on the vehicle" I said yes, the bodyshop repaired a panel. He said "did they disconnect the battery while the welded?" - I hadnt got a clue, but suspect not. He then said that perhaps the ECU had been spiked ?

As all these problems happened immediately after the body repair perhaps he's right.

Could a spiked ECU send out false error codes, a bit like a brain malfunction after a stroke?

Are you able to test an ECU to see if its functioning correctly ???

The fault is now back again and I have been told by another garage that I need a new ECU....... cost from Fiat £642....... but no guarantees it will cure the problem!!!

Any help would be really gratefully received as I really cant afford to carry on spending out on just changing each part to see if the problem is cured.

Many thanks,
Richard.
