Door problem

My drivers side door wont open from the outside. At first i thought the nut on the end of the rod had come off but after putting a new one on it still wouldn't work.

The rod seems to work when the handle is pulled but still the door does not open, it appears that it could be the door lock mechanism that is not working.

Does anyone know how to A) check these and get them out and B) Fix them and how much they are to get fix or replaced?

The rod has a thread on the other end of it, so on the handle it has a plastic clip and on the other thread. If its not wound in proper, it lacks the length to pull the lock enough. Take the door card off and try to adjust it first.
