Was at the scrappies today attempting to extract the quality door handles I have mentioned in other threads.

I had a problem with the lever (or pins) that connect the the external handle to the internal handle, and the internal door locking button. Basically they were total barstewards to disconnect. I lost the first pin retaining clip down the door innards, attempting to remove the second (the one the pdf guide recommends tackling externally), the actual metal tab on the lock barrel retaining metal moulding broke. So the bit that holds the key barrel is damaged.

At this point I snuck out of the scrappies.....thank god that hadn't happened when working on my own car!

So how do I recover this. I'm going to go back tomorrow for the other three handles, so I guess I'm obliged to take and pay for the one I've damaged. The question is this.....I noticed that the lock barrel retaining mechanism is attached to the moulded plastic part of the barrel by three small screws. Has anyone any experience of replacing this part, or put another way, has anyone had success ONLY replacing the plastic and rubber parts of the handle.

It's not how the job is described in this sites guide, and all ebay pictures show the handles with the lock barrel holding metal components attached.....it's a long shot but does anyone know?!

Any tips on how to successfully remove the pins and plastic retaining clips without force also gratefully received.

Thanks

Jeff

Its a fiddly job, but my recommendation is a large flat headed screw driver.

As stated in the guide, remove one of the rods internally and one externally.

When removing the internal one, unbolt some of the window guides to allow a better (but still cramped!! access), put the screw driver in the gap between the handle and rod the twist it, effectively pushing the rod away from the handle. you'd be suprised at how easy it comes out when you get the head of the screw driver in the right place!

As for removing the lock, thats the easy bit, place the key in the barrel, remove the retaining spring clip( as highlighted in the guide) then pull it out!

Think ive covered your questions but if you dont understand or have some more just ask

Locks

Thanks Stu, will try to be more careful with the flat bladed screwdriver leverage thing tomorrow, but the CRUCIAL question still needs answered.

Can I separate all the metal components from the scrappie handle I've already tackled (as I've buggered that particular lock barrel holding assembly) and put my own metal components in?

If not, I've only got three handles!

Thanks Stu. Thats about the twentieth question successfully answered by the forum this week!
