General door handle wont release after i open the door

Hi All,
I have a 2006 punto.
The door handle stays in the up position when i open the door.
I have to physically push it back to the lower position otherwise the door
wont close.
I tried spraying oil on the underneath of the handle,no joy.
How do i fix this,my car is due for NCT next month.
Any help appreciated.

I had the same issue on my old Punto Mk2, the awful bit is removing the door interior panel! I am sort of can remember my had a plastic white clip to hold the metal cable via to the door handle was snap, had to buy used door handle parts. Maybe you are same? Worth to check first. WD40 does not really work on everything!
