Hi all, I'm new here so please excuse if I've posted in the wrong place :)

I have a question re' the titled van, I have just bought it and am trying to find out what is causing the poor/ very poor accelertion and power of this van. It has done 96k but apart from the high-ish milage for it's age it has faired well. Everything seems tight and straight but I have no idea why it is so low on bhp. The mechanic I bought it from (for £2k:slayer: ) has replaced the head with a recon unit and put a new cambelt on it but he couldn't figure out the bhp problem :bang: .. hence the price !.
I would be realy greatfulll if any of you are able to give your comments/ ideas on this one.. be they good or be they bad.

Fiat's rock.. but mine goes better when it's rolling :D

Do a search for 'poor acceleration' or 'no power' and you'll find plenty of threads about problems similar to yours that have already been posted.

Welcome to the forum (y)

Hi Ozzie thanks for the welcome.
I did a BIG search on: no power/ low power/ poor power etc' and have yet to find anything that quite matches my specific problem ??. I've learnt alot about MAF sensors and EGR valves over the past few hours and have concluded that my Doblo is not displaying the syptoms of either failing/ fouling or blocking. So what could it be ?? I have a 1.9 TD that goes like a clapped out 1 litre metro running on cheep juice. I'm not even sure if I have an opperational turbo ? if I do I'm not impressed with it.
PLEASE HELP !! All ideas welcome :)

In that case I do apologise and it could well be that your turbo has packed up :(

It should be nothing like a metro but more like something that makes you go wow when it hits the turbo range at about 1800rpm all the way up to 4000rpm :D

Are you able to freely rev it, at a standstill in neutral for example?

I'm hearing the word turbo here so guess I'll be checking that as soon as I get a mo'. Im also wondering if it would be worth fitting a chip to boost bhp a little, seen a plug in jobby on ebay for £120 and wondered if anybody had any thoughts on these devices and the pro's and con's of fitting them.
Thanks for your help so far.. Let you know what I find out on the turbo side of things :)

A hours diagnostic at dealer (£40-55) will pinpoint your problem easily enough.Certainly sounds 'air' related...egr/airflow/overboost valve/vacuum pipe etc
I have also thought I need a diagnostic done but havn't found anybody localy yet  Don't 'spose anyone in here knows a reasonable garage in the North Herts area that could do the job without charging me an arm and a leg ??
Cheers to all for your input thus far.. (y)

Hi Ozzie, the engine rev's fine it just seems like it doesn't have enough power all the way through the range from pullaway right up to flat out (n) It's particularly noticable at pullaway and whilst in 4th and 5th.. it's almost like i'm in the 2nd when I should be in 1st and so on through the gears.
Cheers again, Phil :)

Just go to nearest dealer & instruct them not to spend more than a hour on the car which is enough for the fault your describe.

Personally, and the view of many others, to stay away from these sorts of things. If you want a professional tune then spend £400 and go to a company such as Angel or Celtic Tuning. Tuning isn't the answer to your problem though as your engine should be pulling well anyway.

Definitely check the turbo, you should feel a slight 'kick' at about 1800-2000rpm when it kicks in, it's not enough to move your body, but if you listen and watch the rev counter you'll see it :)

Hi to all who have kindly commented on my Doblo problems.
I have finaly found, and been to see, a diagnostic specialist, Union St Motors in Luton, who were first class :worship:. The test came up with a fault on the airflow mass sensor. They relaced it = "we have lift off":D "Houston we do not have a problem" :)
I now realy like my new(ish) van and have decided to keep it for a while.

On a different note; I have read quite alot on here about MPG's so I'm in the process of doing a brim to brim test, let you know how that goes, but noticed something weird along the way. Just after filling up to the brim I reset the tripometer and was then AMAZED  to see that on the first leg of my jouney, along a few miles of straight country roads, I got a reading of..... wait for it.... 76.6 mpg !!!. Now as if that isn't good enough I hear/ read that this figure is actualy 20% lower than it should be which gives me a total of 91.92 mpg !!!!!! this must be some kind of record ?. All that being said the figure soon dropped down to the low 40's once I'd hit the towns and roundabouts and also this figure was taken before the air mass thingy got fixed. I'm now down to high 30's but I think it should rise again now she's running properly (no high more reving just to keep up forward momentum).
Cheers for now guys n gals (y)

The computer will settle down eventually, best thing to do is fill her up again and do a brim to brim test now you've had the sensor fixed... or just see what happens :)

I've managed to get 114mpg for about 5minutes doing 50 on the motorway, got fed up of every tom dick and harry overtaking me then though so I sped back up :p

I hear where your coming from Ozzie.. Tom and Harry can overtake me all they like if I'm getting that sort of mpg, but I'm not having a Dick overtake me !! :D

The dobbin stops at 143.2 mpg!!

What you've said made me ponder on such matters..

1) 143.2.. that's an odd number for Fiat to set the mpg 'O' ometer @
2) How would you know this
3) No Doblo (or any other "normal" vehicle) is EVER going to get 143.2 miles to the gallon.. unless you kill the ignition going down a bloody geat hill.. and even then the trip wouldn't register so forget that :bang:
4) erm.. oh don't worry..it wasn't important (I forgot what I was thinking:rolleyes: )
