Been having starting issues with the doblo. On first start up excessive cranking required. Literally minutes to start up. And when it does loads of carbon thrown out of exhaust. No fault codes. A diesel specialist said all fuel pressures are good and there are no other faults he can pick up. He suspects that the dual mass flywheel is out of balance and is causing a loss of signal when start(too much vibration?) I'm going to change the crank sensor to see if there is any improvement. Once started there are no issues until the next morning (cold)
I had assumed a fuel issue, bu he assures me all looked good, as did injectors and glow plugs
Is this a reasonable way to procede?
Is it easy to access?
Anyone got a link to one?

Thanks in advance to any advice

Hi

This was very much the 1.9 jtd era

The stilo section should hold LOTS of great info

Worth checking the condition of the earth cable too ;)

Definately worth checking ecu for fault codes.

By all means change the crank position sensor but they normally fail when hot .

Someone on here was having problems with starting his diesel doblo due to damaged cam position sensor.

Hi
Are you VERY CONFIDENT that they had the correct kit do plug in and diagnose

At 2003 it may not be full OBD2

( the one with a fault mashing the cam sensor didnt run..)

I would be doubting rail pressures and glow plug heat

My last JTD was a poor runner when cold.. plug related (a PIA to access.. might mean they didnt look hard..)

Where are you based ?

I have no reason to doubt the diesel specialist I took it to tt automotive in Loughborough - very reputable I believe. The doblo is showing no fault codes at all. I specifically asked about the fuel pressures and there were no issues with it. I'm in Coalville. Leicestershire

If you haven't resolved your issue then perhaps you could talk to Interservices in Leicester, they are Alfa specialists but use to look after my Marea W/end when I had it. I've obviously haven't used them since moving to Germany but the guy who set it up - Dave should still be running the place.

Still no nearer.
Its still cranking for minutes to start

found a thread on here that talks about a safety valve on the high pressure fuel pump sticking and how he used a clean Allen key to unstick it.

Where it is on the actual pump has got me flummoxed

any one with any ideas, the diagram attached shows it underneath the pump

Had a chat with mechanic today, just to go over the basics again. fuel is arriving at all injectors - pressures unknown. the plugs are less than a year old and appear to be working, not had chance to change crank sensor yet

ARRRRRGH

Did you check whether the injectors get injecting pulses while cranking?
Basically you can find that out by inserting a led parallel to the injection signal. Since i don't know the voltages for that signal i'm unable to recommend a certain circuit. There are quite cheap items for that purpose on the market, so the chance is quite high to find someone who can help. Alternatively an oscilloscope can be helpful. Pros usually use special testers.
Usually the voltage is below 10 V.

Jammed open egr valve can cause problems

Obstructed air inlet will cause problems

Air in fuel ?

I'm interested in how this problem might have been resolved. I have a very similar startup program most mornings but after the first start of the day, the van starts first time every time. I am fairly sure that air is getting into the fuel system somewhere and the fuel is siphoning back to the tank overnight. Have you managed to resolve the issue?
Regards
Les

Since day 1 (2006), my hobby has had starting problems. I have always had to let the glow plugs do their thing and wait for the yellow light to go out - even when warm, the engine has to spin a while before it explodes into life.
Nowadays, I know I have issues with one or more of the plugs. Knowing what a pita some can be to remove, I simply haven't bothered. On cold winter mornings, I have to turn the ignition on a few times in quick succession to get the plugs to heat up.

If I dont let the plugs do their thing, the engine will crank for an absolute age before firing - and that's with a lovely cloud of blue smoke.

happend to me fuel filter and injectors, glow plugs are rarely needed only have a lot cold, use premium fuel not cheap diesel
