Do you use a super fuel?

I use 99.2 octane but only because its the default on my fuel card. Doesn't cost me any more than 95 octane.

the car has normal stuff, the bike has super - and the difference is noticable:slayer:

I usually put the boggo stuff in. I've put V-power in once or twice but couldn't see a difference. It might have given me an extra 1 or 2 mpg but that's not worth the price difference.

Blancmange has whatever is available - currently six month old Asda stuff  Bismarck used to get Shell V-power until I had an argument with Shell and BP Ultimate is too costly so it gets whatever is cheapest plus Millers and it's just as good and if I want it to be even better, I just shove some more in. Even better, when I get biodiesel it's a super-super fuel and cleans everything right out :D

my old punto jtd ran cleaner and went better on v power diesel. currently im driving an old school cavalier sri 16v,most of the 'super' fuels dont make much difference, but it loves tesco 99 octane, can tell how it drives there is more ignition advance (knock sensor determines maximum advance), and it runs really crisp, even more so on these cooler mornings we are having now

oh ffs not this again.

look its really very simple, if your car is designed to run on the higher octane fuel (e.g. jap imports) then you must use it, if you have fully adaptive ignition timing then you will get abeneift using it, but you dont have to (some modern cars), but if your car is designed to run on 95ron fuel and the ignition timing is not fully adaptive (almost every car on the road) then there is no benefit to using a fuel that is higher than 95ron.

thank god for that

your alfa and indeed my dads has fully adaptive ignition and i'm sure you'll agree feels like another 10 horses under the bonnet

my punto on the other hand (and most cars really) no more power but it runs much smother that's why i use it the difference is instant coming out of the petrol station everything goes nice and quiet after running normal 95

incidentally the ford fukcass witch tested will definitely not have fully adaptive ignition there anciant heaps and that ancient diesel technology they tested will will not be anything like today's more sophisticated high pressure common rail diesel engines running up to 7 injections per cycle

i think it's the diesels that see more of an improvement of the noise and vibration factor over cheaper diesel and the emitions

but in both cases diesel and petrol no difference on mpg or at least negligible

as usual witch proving they know naf all about cars

no. tried £30 worth in every car i have owned at some point, more out of idle curiosity than anything else, and if anything it made it a lot worse -exhaust sounded hotter than usual on both puntos.

on the other hand, my minimoto uses super-unleaded :D no kidding, but thats because it has 20 degree ignition advance and roughly 15:1 compression, so it kinda deserves it :chin:

I was surprised at how dumbly this was pitched, I dont know where the stupidity was injected, the Media or the Which report? The Marea is fine on 95 here and over the Channel and I wouldn't waste my money. The MG was designed for 5 star leaded so it's the highest octane you can find plus carry a can of octane booster for emergencies. When were in Denmark with it even with the booster it pinked horribly on their fuel*, maybe theirs is mixed with parafin?
* You can drive round it by reducing manifold depression but it spoils the fun
