The "Lifesaver" is part of the 'bike test because it's not (or at least wasn't until recently) a legal requirement to have mirrors on motorcycles, whereas all new cars for over 30 years have had them fitted by law.
When I had a car with really good mirrors, a Focus, I didn't do blind spot checks (while moving) anywhere as often as I do now with the Panda or Mrs. Beard's 156 because the mirrors aren't that good.
Comments about using mirrors properly are perfectly valid and if used correctly can cut the need to blindspot check almost to nil.
I check my mirrors constantly too to get an awareness of positioning of other cars on the road, but even when doing 100 on the M61, there's always a Ferrari will come up behind you doing 150. If it hasn't happened to you yet, it will one day
i hate it when your in 3rd lane overtaking a middle lane driver and they pull over they get lost in all my mirrors. and i have to accelorate to see em to turn back in.

Sounds like a good reason to carry out a blind spot check to me. Blind spots aren't just over the right shoulder, they could be over the left, or even directly behind.
