General Different brands of petrol and effect on mpg

I cannot say about Asda, but certainly some supermarket petrol is of a lower spec than company fuels. Petrol is supplied in bulk to the distribution centres but the additives are put in afterwards. In our office several diffferent people have kept long term consumption records on very different cars and we all reckon to get up to 3 mpg more from company petrol. This may also mean a cleaner burn. This way outstrips the price difference.

A friend whos a mechanic told me that supermarket brand fuel is cheap for a reason. When they're making petrol, most petrol companies like esso etc will have their fuel being processed for alot longer than supermarkets do. The result is a less pure petrol which will eventually clog up injectors if used regularly over time. This is why high spec car dealers say stay away from it! If I were you, I'd use Esso/Total/BP/Shell 95 or 98 octane. Good petrol, Good MPG and more trustworthy.

It also depends the level of the forecourt. With mine shoing the warning lamp for ages I brimmed it at one place and got. £40 in. The next place I filled with 1/4 tank full and got £40 in. The 2nd garage had a sloped forecourt putting the rear right corner at the highest point.
So garage#1 seemed to give a much better MPG than garage#2

Every fuel manufacturer has got their own additive packages. The story that supermarket fuels are of a low quality is a load of rubbish.

When Teco had the problem with the contaminated fuel it was Tesco being hit the hardest becuase they are the biggest provider of forecourts. The very same problem affected some of the Texaco garages in the same region as thay get the fuel from the some depot.

The differences in fuel are due to the additive packages. That this has its effects on fuel consumption is a fact. But there isn't the best and the worst fuel.

Some cars work better with some fuels and other cars won't.

Ususally when re-mapping cars with a higher level of performance we recommend to stick to the fuel the car has been mapped with.
