Technical diesel emissions

Hi can anyone offer an opinion as to why my jtd110 multi (X reg 60000 miles) has failed its mot due to poor emissions?
It had just been serviced so all filters, fuel and air have been changed. Fuel consumption seems OK at the moment 40-45 mostly round town and to school etc.
Not sure what's the best approach before I start chucking money at it and not that impressed with my local dealers service to date.

Do you have the fail sheet with the emissions print out?

The MOT was done by a friend of a friend yesterday. He just told me that it failed I will try and find out more. I haven't picked it up yet the old MOT still has a month to run so would like to try and get this sorted. What should I ask specifically?

My vehicle failed the smoke test coming back with an average reading of 5.9 when it should average 3. Could this be the catalytic converter?
