it has a pxe code too which according to hp site is easy to rectify

Yes, it should be a doodle - just go into the BIOS and check the HDD boot device priority, lol.

i can manage with instructions. the hdd is 3rd priority, not sure where should be though

Do you have a floppy or another drive attached? Or maybe something in the DVD player? If so, remove them first.

The HDD has obviously went amiss at some point which has lead to boot problems.
My system is first boot device is C: then nothing else, I change the priority as and when i need it to increase startup speed and decrease wear on stuff like opticals which spin up for no reason.
Have you got a Windows XP disc? or system restore?

ive got the xp disc but i cant do anything. when i put it in, it tries to load then says theres no hard drive
