General "Depollution" Engine warning message

General "Depollution" Engine warning message

Ah, I have had this - the car has gone into 'recovery mode', with 50% throttle [not fun when you get it on the M4 going into Wales on a Friday night]....

Again, as per tyre wear thread, Ulysse is going in this Friday to get things sorted once and for all....

I thought about buying a OBD II laptop interface off E-Bay, apparently you can reset the engine light. Not sure if this also resets the emergency program.

In my experience of warning lights, none of them have ever been a proper fault. The only fault was the warning system.

Well it looks like it wasn't the throttle sensor which was causing the problem. My wife has just phoned from the car to say the depollution warning is back - but much worse than that, there is a severe loss of power and she can only drive at about 5 mph - so at that speed it's going to be a while until I can have a look for myself.

Having the wife driving @ only 5 mph could be a blessing in disguise :D .

Is she home yet? ;)

Yes she's home! It's put her off the car though - she had 6 girls in it for my daughters birthday party. Apparently engine power returned to normal after a few minutes, and a couple of hours later, the warning message reset itself - another phantom fault.

Poggy I had the same thoughts as you, and I got as far as confirming compatibility with one of the suppliers - apparently we need an EOBD interface with the ISO protocol. If we could get hold of a copy of the Examiner software as well that wouldn't that be handy! It seems to be very scarce outside of the dealer community though.

I have experienced this ANTI POLLUTION FAILURE WARNING several times. It's quite disturbing when the car goes into this "recovery mode". I found that switching the ignition off and back on again resets the vehicle back to "normal mode" but the warning still comes back for a few more hours on startup. Not very convenient if you can't find somewhere to stop though! My garage (Thames Fiat at Slough) inform me that it may be something to do with the computer detecting that too much pollution is emitted when the car is going nowhere(for example when you have the clutch depressed for a long period of time preparing to pull out into the traffic stream) . They are looking at it again now, as well as my leaking roof for the 4th time, with exact conditions as reported by PAT H on the Leaky front Sunroof thread.

Poggy it gets checked/refilled at 50 or 70,00 miles,I got all the technical info on the system so i'll check it if I remember

Found some stuff that may be of interest (sorry but can't be arsed looking out rest of my notes etc);

FAP (anti particulate filter) available on 2.2 diesel engines only, controled by module behind n/s dash.
Able to cut exhaust particles by 93%,these particles burn of at 450oC,actual temperature is 550oC but additive lowers temperature by 100oC.2 types of additive is used (earlier models=DPX,later=EOLYS)stored in extra 5 litre tank under vehicle, this is mixed with diesel in main fuel tank.

FAP regeneration; depending on exhaust gas temperature.Artificial regeneration requires engine coolant temperature over 62oC & more than 175 miles with engine load equal to pre-determined level,no regeneration at idle.
Natural regeneration requires high temperature from high speed/load conditions.

PAF is fitted infront of the catalytic convertor with a filter life of 50,000miles.

I can only assume the light coming on (then soon after off) is 'artificial' regeneration' taking place.

Nice one.

My Ulysse is being picked up tomorrow, for an endless list of niggles, this included - I will stress the above to their service manager when he gets to the house in the morning.

Service manager collects car at your house? Not thats what I call service (y)

Great - the manager forgot, lol (n)

Anyway, they are sending someone out now to pick it up - can't complain really. Got a nice list of issues in the car waiting for them; doubt they will all be resolved today, but as long as they start to rectify issues, order parts, etc, then I am happy with that.

If you look across the forum, been ongoing, but currently:

Depollution system error - ongoing issues, new CAT already fitted at about 9k miles, goes into recovery mode; basically, don't trust car on long distances.

Tyre wear - hopefully a rear axle replacement - rear n/s tyre down to its cord at around 10k miles. Rest of tyres virtually shot to pieces already.

Temperature guage - every so often, shoots up to maximum temp [i.e. all the bars come up], gives warnings, then goes back to normal - obviously, temperature is stable, so a sensor issue.

Door runners - flaking paint.

The dealership is aware of all the problems well before today BUT they can never supply a similar courtesy car; seeing that it tends to have 6 kids in it most days, and the school run, this causes issues. So had to wait until holidays, plus wanted Stilo sorting - Ulysse will hopefully get a lot of issues dealt with whilst in 2nd year warranty, not 3rd year :)

Hmm, interesting :chin:

Picked it up today [after having a play in a 147 JTD courtesy car :p] - apparently, they have done 2 recalls on it, and changed the temperature sensor - this SHOULD stop any more depollution errors...

Not quite sure what they have done - the manager had popped out?! I will ask him in a few weeks, when it is booked in for 2nd year service - not sure of the outcome of the tyrewear/door runners issues either

Ah, some 'clips' were mentioned, so that must be the undertray.

They seem convinced that the depollution error is solved; at least every niggle has been reported whilst in 2nd year warranty.

Recalls might of been for water in airbag module (pipe modification) and undertray fixings.

Found few more notes on the FAP,bit boring reading but will post if of any use?

Hi,

I'd be grateful for any details that you may have. I've been digging around to establish whether there are any outstanding recalls on my Ulysse (04, 2.0 JTD). Obviously, Fiat customer services state that there are none!

Sorry for asking a silly question but what is FAP?

Thanks

I've been getting this warning for sometime now but no adverse affect on performance, used to come on periodically so thought it was the filter cleaning itself but now its on more than it's off.

Asked dealer to look at it when it was in for a service and they told me it was the filter and that it needed flushed out, wanted to charge me £150 for the privilige claiming that it was servicable item and not covered under warranty.

I refused and have yet to convince them that if it's a servicable item at 60,000 then I shouldn't be paying for it to be put right at 36,000!

Stuart, has your problem re-occured since they replaced the temp sensor?
