Defender 110 problems

[Most Easterly Pandas]

Down at our friends down in London staying for a few days and normally do a few odd jobs for them.

One of their cars is a J-reg Defender 110. 2.5L Derv.

It seem to be surging apparently. Idles fine, but go to accelerate and it goes chug chug chug and dies. Sounds fuel related?!?

I'm going to give it a bloody good service as it's not been done since he got it in 2003 :bang: Hopefully that might help as it's the air/fuel filter blocked?

Any other general idea's, anyone had similar problems with a Defender or other Diesel vehicle?

fuel filter is the first suspect especially as its not been serviced since 2003. What you need is an idea of what changed in the fuel system.

Also glow plugs maybe dead/dying

also check fuel pump pressure- it should be 4 bar.

Also, injectors could be dying, but go with previous post first

Well I've given it a service;

Oil
Oil Filter
Air Filter
Fuel Filter

And she's now running one hell of alot better! Think it was either air or fuel filter that was causing it.

From my experience dabbling with filtered, used veg it would be the Fuel filter.

Another thing that would help is a hefty dose of redex, and drive it like you nicked it ie standard pre MOT jobby

Oh trust me, he drives all of his cars like they're stolen Thought I was bad at times

Got loads of little dents, and about 5 tonnes of paper in the back at the mo (nearly took a pic on the phone, with all our shopping from Macro in, but on way of getting it to the PC

I did think of doing those also. Will leave until I'm next down in the summer when I do another oil change, as I can't see the new oil in it staying golden for long after not being serviced for so long.

Glow plugs are about a tenner a set of four, its one of the good things about an old Land Rover, parts are cheap, because you'll need plenty of them

defender 200tdi are excellent, being new enough to not be hopelessly slow and underpowered yet still retaining the ability for easy-ish DIY. still not perefect though lol.

A bigger/better intercooler and a wee tweak of the fuel pump can liberate extra horses easily.

plenty of space for it too!

on a side note, when running offroad at low speed would a larger intercooler reduce power by actually warming the air further? but then with a low range is the power needed

Don't think I'd have been able to have used that. The car only just idled, let alone a fast idle! It was really that bad!
