Hi, I've had my 500e a few days now and am enjoying it very Much h,my first electric car

I have a dislike of daytime running lights and always turn them off, but I can't find a way to do this on the 500e?
Does anyone know how to turn off the DRLs??

OK, as a previous biker and cyclist I see your point, but on the subject of visibility do bicycle lights need to be so Bright, and quite often badly positioned?

So bright yes, driving I find a very bright flashing from or rear is better than high vis sometimes. Badly positioned that’s another question!
Sorry to OP but to take further off topic why is it when I ride a horse on the road (something that if it lands on your car will kill you too) do I have to bow and scrape to every motorist but many cyclists actively ignore drivers?

If the DRLs are turned off, if that was possible, the insurance company count it against you in a claim.

If they are disconnected, that's a modification and they're likely to decline cover.

My last car had the option to turn them off in the vehicle settings, how do the insurance companies view that? Is it OK in this case or was I driving around uninsured?

All I can say is that our first 500 was written off in 2012, someone pulled out in a Toyota Auris, we hit it and put it on its side.
They asked if our DRLs were on.

We had a compensation claim for, thankfully, light back and neck injuries as part of the overall claim and an insurance investigator came to see us. There were a lot of bogus injury claims at the time and they wanted to be sure, he had a massive questionnaire, one of the questions was were the DRLs or headlights on.

He explained that as it was daylight when the accident happened and if the DRLs had been off then the insurance company would say you increased the chances of an accident because they were off making you less visible and they may reduce the compensation because the risk was higher. I wouldn't know if this happens, they put all this in to a computer to make sure they have to pay out least amount possible!

You were insured because you used a legitimate user menu to turn them off, so that's not a worry, if you disconnected them or took the bulbs out then that would be different.

Like everything else, if its in the menu, its a choice

DRLs became a legal requirement after a set date. Prior to that, they were optional. Many manufacturers included them with new designs, if that car was intended to still be in production after the mandatory date. Some, like Fiat, gave the option to turn them off, as their use was not mandatory on vehicles of that age. Vehicles menufactured to be sold after the mandatory date will have no facility to turn them off.

I agree with your sentiment, but would rather this than the silly B's who have no bicycle lights! I am sick and tired of coming acrosss darkly dressed idiots on bikes with no lights wobbling along in the pitch dark!!! Additional , vaguely linked gripe... Will you all please USE YOUR HANDBRAKE when sitting in traffic at night, not the footbrake. I am sure all Fiat Forumers do this without me moaning!

The human brain often does not work properly.
We arrive at a junction with limited visibility. Our eyes say "we cannot see". Our brain interprets, "we cannot see any problems, therefore there are no problems." This causes people to pull out into the path of others. Also, if we cannot see, we stare, as if looking at the same view for longer, may allow us to see further.
Then there's the "I can see you, therefore you can see me." This is what allows people to walk into the road wearing dark clothing, assuming the driver can see them, or to ride bicycles without lights. The opposite side of this, is like the small child that hides its head under a cushion, and declares, "you can't see me now".

The brake lights issue is only going to get worse.
People are lazy, so hold the brake insteadof using the handbrake.
Electronic handbrakes are a pain, so encourage non-use. Many have an 'auto-hold' feature, that once stopped will hold the car until the driver moves away, but many of these will keep the brake lights illuminated, even though the driver has released the pedal. Many electric vehicles have auto-hold. Some do not have a handbrake function, applying them automatically when the power is turned off, with no manual control.
Automatic vehicles can be moved to N or P and the handbrake applied, but few bother, instead, holding it on the brake. An auto with stop/start will only stop the engine while the footbrake is held, keeping the brake lights on. If N is selected, and handbrake used, releasing the footbrake restarts the engine.

Next we'll need auto-darkening windscreens, like a welding helmet.
