Technical Dashboard lights not coming on?

Otherday my dashboard lights were fine and then last night 19.04.12 i was driving and they would not come on so i had no idea what speed i was doing because the lights did come on any ideas why this could be? or what i should do the carry out checks?

Earth fault most probably. Could be a worn connection, cable or dry solder joint (if they are soldered, not sure). Most probably have to take the dash apart to find the earth and check but other forum members may know where it comes out.
